Dispari&Dispari Project

ZERO (Weak Fist) is the project by the visual artist Patrick Tuttofuoco selected by the Italian Council 2017 that takes place in Rimini, Berlin and Bologna from September 15th, 2018 to February 17, 2019.

Proposed by the Polo Museale dell’Emilia Romagna with the collaboration of Rimini Town Council, Bologna Academy of Fine Arts, the Italian Cultural Institute in Berlin and Xing, it is one of the select few international projects chosen by MIBAC’s General Direction for Contemporary Art and Architecture and Urban Peripheries as distinguished for the heterogeneity of the areas and the artistic languages adopted.

ZERO (Weak Fist) is a transiting intervention: a mobile light sculpture designed to be relocate to a series of places in Rimini, Berlin and Bologna. The places chosen for exhibiting the piece in the three different cities are characterised by archaeological and fossil evidence, as if they had remained unchanged over time (formally or ideally): the Roman Augusto Arch of Rimini, the court of the Italian Embassy in Berlin (shared with the Italian Cultural Institute) which is literally the extroflexion of a national space in foreign territory open to hospitality, and the Porta Zamboni/San Donato, access point to the university district of Bologna which has been the place of irradiation of the medieval recovery of Roman law. The sculpture is an object that, while maintaining a melancholic or even disheartened form, highlights the presence, context and role of the architectural surroundings to which it is attached almost in a form of symbiosis. The falling fist may seem a surrender, but it could also be a non-violent negotiation attempt. In sign language, ZERO is expressed by showing the closed hand with the thumb in contact with the tips of the other fingers. Polysemically it connects the gesture of an unarmed doryphoros and the suspended release between tension and relaxation of a semi-open fist allusive of human doing and its vita activa. ZERO (Weak Fist) is an unstable artwork, visible in its medial nature during the night, which uses an allusive symbol that is at the same time joyful and looming, in connection with the different monuments of Rimini, Berlin and Bologna. It is a non-violent gesture nestling between strong architectural forms, signifying the persistence of critical thinking.

Galerie im Körnerpark
April 28 - July 4, 2018

Social cohesion and solidarity seem to have become fragile today more than ever. Worldwide, societies are confronted with nationalist tendencies. The public perception of flight and immigration usually focuses, on the challenges facing society. The artist Thomas Kilpper sets a different perspective: What does the loss of home for refugees mean? Is the social uprooting, which means flight, counteracted or even amplified by the people in the places of arrival? Can uprooting also open up new opportunities?

The beginning of the exhibition marks Thomas Kilpper's new series "Burnout" with charcoal drawings of burning refugee shelters. The centerpiece of the exhibition is an uprooted tree using parts of the old maple tree that overturned in front of the Galerie im Körnerpark during a storm in the summer of 2017. In this expansive installation, the artist integrates new woodcuts, portraits of people exposed to or opposed to racist violence. In addition to clearly right-wing extremist attacks and attacks, he pays special attention to cases in which racism is suspected as a motive, as in the murders of Burak Bektaş and Luke Holland in Neukölln. Thomas Kilpper sees his installation as a critique of violence, but also as an impulse for an open and solidarity living together.

IO, LUCA VITONE

13 October 2017 - 03 December 2017
curated by Luca Lo Pinto and Diego Sileo

On the occasion of the 13th edition of the Contemporary Day dedicated to Italian art, the PAC Padiglione d’Arte Contemporanea in Milan presents the exhibition Io, Luca Vitone that explores the intense wide production of the Italian artist born in 1964 in Genoa and based in Berlin.

Starting from the physical and historical architecture places, Vitone analyses a personal dimension built through a stratification of different languages connected to the identities and roots of the place itself, and challenges the conventions of faded, blurred memory. As a curious and untiring traveler, with a spirit lying halfway between an anarchist and a nomad, his work explores the ways in which the places built their identity through the cultural production: art, music, architecture, political associations and ethnic minority.

Curated by Luca Lo Pinto and Diego Sileo, the exhibition at PAC will cover the artistic career of Luca Vitone spanning 30 years, through a selection of his most significant projects rather than a juxtaposition of individual pieces. Following the architecture of the space, it will articulate in several rooms each one devoted to a specific body of work as they have been originally presented in their entirety. By using the entire exhibition as medium, Vitone will transform the physical space of the institution into a work functioning as a palimpsest to display other pieces, reproposing an early work contextualized in the exhibition space and a new version of his works made with dust. He will likewise employ the external space of PAC and the catalogue as a further extension of the exhibition.

The project will expand into the city with a selection of artist’s works installed at the fascinating cloisters of the Basilica di Sant’Eustorgio – one of the oldest churches in Milan founded in the 4th century –, at the Museo Diocesano and at Museo del Novecento with the work Wide City (1998).

OGR Torino
