“Who go to Algeria?”, people ask me. Algeria has much to offer and it was one of my favourite trips. 🇩🇿✨
From Mediterranean ports to ancient Roman cities and desert civilizations, Algeria has some remarkable cultural treasures. I love old stones and the Roman ruins was one of the main reasons to visit.
📍 Algiers – The white capital where Ottoman palaces, French colonial architecture, and the legendary Casbah overlook the Mediterranean. A city shaped by centuries of trade, art, - and resistance. Getting lost in the Casbah is a must.
📍 Tipasa – Roman ruins located right by the sea. Temples, amphitheaters, and basilicas tell the story of an ancient Mediterranean city. And only 1 hour drive from the capital.
📍 M’Zab Valley – A masterpiece of desert architecture. This was a definite highlight 1,5 hour by plane from Algier. 5 fortified towns built by the Mozabite people, where tradition, community, and ingenious urban planning have endured for nearly a thousand years.
📍 Djemila – One of the best-preserved Roman cities in North Africa. Yes indeed. Its arches, forums, and mosaics rise dramatically from the mountains of northeastern Algeria. Oh the mosaics.
📍 Constantine – The “City of Bridges,” suspended over deep gorges. A cultural heartland known breathtaking architecture - the views are everyone. Not for people afraid of heights. Around 5 hours east of Algier or 1 by plane.
Algeria was surprisingly pleasant and welcoming. The visa is a bit difficult and you gott have local guides - but it’s worth it.
