- A Duet for Three

The Trinitarian mystery of the Domine Deus in the Mass in B minor

First part

At the heart of the Gloria of Bach’s Mass in B minor lies a piece that, at first glance, presents itself as an elegant galant-style duet for soprano and tenor. But the closer one looks, the more it reveals a theological and compositional depth of extraordinary complexity.

In this instalment of our Musical Insights series, we enter the heart of the Domine Deus, the fifth movement of the Gloria, placed at the exact centre of a nine-movement structure. A position that, as we shall see, is far from coincidental: Bach constructs the entire Mass by always placing the figure of Christ as the load-bearing axis of each of its great sections.

We will explore the two voices that dialogue while exchanging the roles of Father and Son, the traverso flute that embroiders melodies above them and an apparently simple question that conceals philological, acoustic and theological implications of quite another order: one flute or two?

And then we will do something unusual: we will listen to the same piece in two contrasting performances, Karl Richter and Ton Koopman, to understand concretely what it means today to perform Bach in a historically informed way, and why this choice radically transforms the character of the music.

A remarkable family reunion at the Salzburg Festival.

Conductor Manfred Honeck and his brother Rainer Honeck , concertmaster of the Vienna Philharmonic since 1992, are working together in Richard Strauss’s Ariadne auf Naxos.

The production brings Manfred to the podium of the Vienna Philharmonic Wiener Philharmoniker , with Rainer leading the orchestra from the concertmaster’s chair. Directed by Ersan Mondtag Ersan Mondtag , this unconventional staging moves the action from Vienna to Mars and runs in Salzburg through August 28.

Raised in a family of nine children, the two brothers began their musical journeys as violinists under the guidance of their father. Decades later, they meet again on one of the world’s most prestigious stages.

Two giants of the 20th century. Two very different relationships with Russia.

Igor Stravinsky built his career largely outside his homeland, eventually living in Western Europe and the United States. Dmitri Shostakovich remained in the Soviet Union, creating under a regime that could praise an artist one day and condemn him the next.

Shostakovich experienced official denunciations, censorship and genuine fear for his future. Yet his music remained extraordinarily personal: tragic, ironic, grotesque and often filled with ambiguity.

That is the idea behind the joke:

“How did you get your music out?”

“I hid it inside the music.”

We should be careful not to reduce every Shostakovich score to a secret anti-Soviet message — scholars still debate how some of his music should be interpreted. But the image captures something undeniable: while Stravinsky found artistic freedom outside Soviet Russia, Shostakovich had to create extraordinary music while living within its constraints.

Two composers. Two destinies. And two completely different ways of remaining free through music.
