🎼 Why did composers write in all keys?

If all major and minor scales follow the same pattern, why didn’t composers simply stick to one key?

Before modern equal temperament, each key had its own sound, color, and emotional character. Some were associated with heroism, others with melancholy, drama, or contemplation. Practical reasons mattered too: certain keys worked better for specific instruments and voices.

Johann Sebastian Bach helped transform music history with The Well-Tempered Clavier, proving that composers could successfully write in all 24 major and minor keys.

Today, keys are mathematically more alike than ever, yet many musicians still perceive unique colors and expressive qualities in different tonalities.

🎹 Do you think musical keys have distinct personalities, or is it mainly a cultural tradition?

Two giants. Two very different personalities. One unforgettable chapter in jazz history.

Charlie Parker, the revolutionary architect of bebop, and Chet Baker, the lyrical prince of West Coast jazz, shared a brief but fascinating musical connection during the early 1950s. Parker admired Baker’s melodic sensitivity, while Baker drew inspiration from Bird’s fearless creativity and harmonic genius.

Though they came from different worlds and approached music in different ways, their encounters symbolized a bridge between the intensity of bebop and the cool elegance of West Coast jazz. Together, they remind us that great music is often born from contrasts rather than similarities.

Their legacy continues to inspire musicians and listeners around the world, proving that jazz is, above all, a conversation between unique voices.
