We're so proud of everything achieved this summer in a few short weeks of production on AS YOU LIKE IT. One thing that didn't quite make it in time was the playbill for the show. So before we truly turn the page, we want to make sure that every individual who helped bring it to life is publicly honored.

This production was built by an extraordinary company of actors, designers, administrators, crew, hosts, sponsors, and friends who lent their talent, time, trust, and resources to ETR.

We close our Artist Spotlight Series with the person who made all things ETR possible!

Thirty years ago, Gaby founded the English Theatre of Rome with a simple but ambitious vision: to bring English-language theatre to audiences across the Eternal City. Three decades later, that vision is thriving through the remarkable community of artists, collaborators, students, and audiences that have grown up around it.

As we celebrate ETR's 30th, we proudly conclude this series with our founder and the executive producer of AS YOU LIKE IT: the one and only Gaby Ford.

ETR : Where do you call home?

Gaby : "Home is where the heart is."

ETR : Tell us a little about your creative background.

Gaby : "I am celebrating 30 years of creating English language theatre here in Rome."

ETR : What was your role in AS YOU LIKE IT?

Gaby : "Production, logistics, casting support, location scouting, marketing, writing letters of persuasion, reporting financials... for starters."

ETR : What inspired you to bring AS YOU LIKE IT to life this way?

Gaby : "My collaborator Carl is a talented director. He staged Sara Ruhl's EUYRDICE for us a few years ago and created a family within the company."

ETR : What surprised you most about this process?

Gaby : "That everyone was so willing to embrace the project with so many unknowns-- timing, venue, resources. That so many artists were all willing to work on a wing and a prayer. Shakespeare inspires people to do that."

ETR: If audiences could witness one moment they never saw on stage, what would you want them to see?

Gaby: "The people behind the scenes who facilitate the magic on stage through the miracles they perform backstage."

ETR: In a few words, what do you hope audiences took away from the summer run of AS YOU LIKE IT.

Gaby: "Shakespeare!-- and a smile. Great literature performed for free... how can you go wrong?"

And with that, we conclude this series celebrating the remarkable artists, technicians, designers, musicians, volunteers, and visionaries who made our summer production of Shakespeare's AS YOU LIKE IT possible.

Every ETR production is the result of hundreds of hours of conversation, thousands of choices, and countless acts of trust.

As our summer run of AS YOU LIKE IT wrapped, we asked director Carl C. Granieri to reflect on the team that came together this summer and made the impossible seem routine:

ETR : Where's home?

Carl : "Well, I grew up in southern New Jersey. Professionally, my early career was centered in Washington, DC and Philadelphia, but Louisiana has been home for the last decade. Artistically though... Rome keeps calling me back. Every time I leave, I think I've finished whatever conversation I'm having with the city. Every time I come back, the conversation deepens."

ETR : What's your creative background?

Carl : "I'm a theatre-maker who somehow wandered into academia instead of away from it. I've spent my career moving back and forth between television, professional theatre, and the university because I've never understood why those worlds-- the worlds of making and of thinking-- are treated as separate. Wherever I am, the work is the same, I think: gather good people together, ask difficult questions, tell a beautiful story."

ETR : What does the job of directing entail?

Carl : "People usually imagine the director as the person with all the answers. I think the job is almost the opposite: to ask the right questions and then create an environment where dozens of performers and creatives are empowered to answer them together. Sometimes that means talking about text. Sometimes it means unpacking the minute details of Shakespeare's world. Sometimes it means solving a logistical nightmare involving trucks, rain, power, and rehearsal schedules. The job changes every hour, but the goal is unchanging: help the company tell the story as truthfully as we can."

ETR : What has surprised you most about working on AS YOU LIKE IT?

Carl : "Honestly?-- how readily the universe rewards blind, dumb hope and the belief that impossible things can be made possible with good energy.

On paper, the timeline and available resources for this show should have made the production impossible. The team shouldn't have been as cohesive as it was after only three weeks of work together-- thirteen countries of origin, different training traditions, native tongues, generations, pre-existing conflicts. Some actors had years of Shakespeare behind them, others had never spoken a line of classical text. A spirit of play turned out to be far more important than experience. This might sound hokey, but I feel like generosity-- far more than English-- was the common language of the company."

ETR : What do you hope audiences took away from our production?

Carl : "I hope people remember AS YOU LIKE IT as an unexpected flash of summer joy. Shakespeare doesn't belong to academics or the finest of finely-trained actors. He certainly doesn't belong in a museum. He belongs to anyone willing to gather with strangers in a park or courtyard and imagine another world together for a few hours.

If audiences were entertained, fantastic. But if they left feeling something-- especially if that something was that community is still possible in a fractured world of failing institutions, that identity is an act of agency-- then we accomplished something wonderful."

Our Artist Spotlight Series celebrating the crew and creatives behind AS YOU LIKE IT continues tonight with Hannah Bonbright (she/her), our Rehearsal Stage Manager.

Every rehearsal, every prop, every entrance, every schedule, every problem solved behind the scenes in the lead up to tech-- Hannah was at the center of it all, helping turn a month of rehearsals into a production that could travel across the City of Rome.

ETR: Where do you call home?

Hannah: "Richmond, Virginia."

ETR: Tell us a little about your creative background.

Hannah: "I'm currently studying English back home in the States and working at Theatre Intime in Princeton, New Jersey."

ETR: What was your role in the production?

Hannah: "I was the Stage Manager. I helped structure rehearsals, managed logistics, and kept track of props and blocking for actors. This was my first time stage managing and I had an absolute blast with it!"

ETR: What inspired you to join the AS YOU LIKE IT team?

Hannah: "I wanted to spend the summer in Italy and was immediately drawn to ETR! My school sponsored me and helped fund the internship with Carl and Gaby."

ETR: What surprised you most about working on AS YOU LIKE IT?

Hannah: "I have been most surprised by the incredible people I have met working on this show. Everyone has been so wonderfully generous with their time and energy. I was also very excited to see people at all different stages of their acting careers bond over our show. We had professional actors working alongside people who were performing in their first ever show!"

ETR: If audiences could witness one moment they never saw onstage, what would you want them to see?

Hannah: "Our very first read-through. It was a magical moment and so special to have everyone together. For me, it was also my first time working on a professional production, so it was an important moment to see how the production would start to come together."

ETR: What do you hope audiences took away from this production?

Hannah: "The joy it was infused with! This production never fails to make me laugh, something we all need a little more of these days."

Our Artist Spotlight Series continues today with Asia Chantal Afi Aniwanou-- but you can call her Asia Anou-- a member of our AS YOU LIKE IT costume and wardrobe team.

Whether sourcing pieces, making last-minute alterations, or helping actors prepare moments before they stepped onstage, Asia worked to keep the magic alive behind the scenes.

ETR: Where do you call home?

Asia: "California is my first passport. Then I moved to Paris, which was a very foundational experience. Now I’m in Rome, and I have a garden, so I’m always eager to get home and water my plants. I guess Rome is home."

ETR: Tell us a little about your creative background.

Asia: "I’m a seamstress, designer, personal shopper and stylist with a non-creative background in business and economics. I learned to sew by one day popping into the shop of a lovely Parisian man who decided to take me under his wing and teach me everything he knows. Now I’m continuing that learning experience with a Roman character who lets me sew in his boutique while also offering me guidance."

ETR: What inspired you to join the AS YOU LIKE IT team?

Asia: "I wanted to do more costume design because I find it fascinating from a sartorial, historical, and aesthetic point of view. It's also wonderful working with a team behind the scenes, watching all the rehearsals and hard work that lead to such an entertaining production. I love the challenge of being resourceful-- observing, jumping in where I'm needed, and finding solutions in a millisecond. That's the fun of theatre. It's all happening in real time."

ETR: If audiences could witness one moment they never saw onstage, what would you want them to see?

Asia: "I watched one of the actors, Habib, run along the Tiber before going onstage at Parco Marconi-- in more than 30-degree heat-- just so he would genuinely appear exhausted and out of breath for his entrance. Then, after the fight scene, the actors who had roughed him up would always follow him backstage to make sure he was okay. I loved seeing that level of care between the men."

ETR: What do you hope audiences took away from AS YOU LIKE IT?

Asia: "There are moments where you can jump into the play, cheering and clapping, or simply sit back and watch the magic unfold in a beautiful setting. Either way, I think you're moved by what you experience, and you carry a piece of it with you. It's food for thought."

The audience sees the finished picture, but the crew sees every stitch, quick change, and last-minute repair-- every quiet act of care and small miracle that makes live theatre possible. Thanks, Asia, for helping weave the look of our production together.

Our Artist Spotlight Series continues this Sunday by celebrating the remarkable crew and creative team behind our summer run of AS YOU LIKE IT.

Today we're shining the spotlight on costume designer Kamalpreet Kaur. From the contemporary world of the court to the earthy freedom of the Forest of Arden, Kamalpreet helped shape the show's visual journey through imagination and a passion for storytelling.

ETR: What inspired you to join the AS YOU LIKE IT team?

Kamalpreet: "I love costumes and creating the looks for the characters of every story I work on. Working to make the characters come to life visually with beautiful clothes and accessories gives me so much joy, which is why when I got the opportunity to work on this production I grabbed it immediately."

ETR: What was the greatest creative challenge?

Kamalpreet: "This is what we do with limited resources-- DIY, reuse, and recycle. A sustainable approach to creative work."

ETR: What surprised you most about working on AS YOU LIKE IT?

Kamalpreet: "I would not say surprised, but seeing every single person working so hard and witnessing the talent across the entire team made me very, very happy. I was so happy to be a part of this creative team."

ETR: If audiences could witness one moment they never saw onstage, what would you want them to see?

Kamalpreet: "All the behind-the-scenes work. Only we know how much effort and hard work everyone put into their roles, and that deserves even more appreciation."

ETR: What do you hope audiences took away from AS YOU LIKE IT?

Kamalpreet: "Kindness, love, good times, and lots of beautiful memories."

The costumes may seem effortless once the show begins, but behind every look is imagination, problem-solving, and countless creative decisions...

Our Artist Spotlight Series celebrating the AS YOU LIKE IT crew and creative team continues today with Assistant Stage Manager Rossella Cetorelli. Rossella, an aspiring actor, found an entirely different way to become an essential part of the company. Her journey is a reminder that there are countless ways to tell a story...

ETR: Where is home?

Rossella: "Rome and London."

ETR: Tell us a little about your creative background.

Rossella: "I have been attending acting classes for the past three years. I train with Francesco Pompilio, actor and director at La Compagnia del Martedì, and I am also a member of Teatro Azione, where I attend the Acting in English program with Adrian McCourt and Douglas Dean. I'm aspiring to act and learn as much as I can!"

ETR: What inspired you to join the AS YOU LIKE IT team?

Rossella: "I auditioned to be in the play as an actress. It was my first audition! I loved the idea of being part of this production and wanted to contribute in any way I could. It was painful initially, but I followed the cycle, and it became a good thing for me to do."

ETR: What surprised you most about working on this show?

Rossella: "I have learned so much just by observing rehearsals. It was fascinating to watch the unique ways each actor prepares backstage. The environment is incredibly professional, yet maintains such a warm and friendly atmosphere. I genuinely feel this experience has not just been an adventure-- it has also changed some of my personal perspectives. Watching Carl direct has been such a gift!"

ETR: If audiences could watch one moment they never saw onstage, what would you want them to witness?

Rossella: "The process of creating a character and the relationship between the director and the actors. If I had to choose one moment, it would be rehearsing the final scene. Those rehearsals always made me emotional."

ETR: What do you hope audiences took away from the summer pop-up run of the show?

Rossella: "The crew's incredible talent made the entire production feel remarkably real, and their generosity was inspiring. It is also a beautiful reminder that diversity is what enriches and elevates our world. We need more of it."

The magic of theatre isn't created by performers alone. It grows from every rehearsal, every backstage cue, every problem solved, and every person willing to say, "How can I help?" We're very grateful Rossella said yes to that journey.

Tonight we're featuring Assistant Stage Manager Beatrice De Bonis. Beatrice: "Rome, Italy."

Beatrice: "My resume includes singing, acting, and stage management."

ETR: What inspired you to join the AS YOU LIKE IT team?

Beatrice: "I wanted a new opportunity to work in theatre..."

ETR: What surprised you most about this show?

Beatrice: "The limited time we had to make everything work-- although everyone did wonders with the organization."

ETR: If audiences could witness one moment they never saw onstage, what would you want them to see?

Beatrice: "The production meetings and all the coordination among different departments."

ETR: What single word best describes this production?

Beatrice: "Collaboration."

ETR: What do you hope audiences took away from the show?

Beatrice: "The immense effort of the actors and the production team!"

Next up in the Spotlight Series, we're delighted to introduce our Tech-and-Run Stage Manager Alara Özen. Alara kept rehearsals and performances running smoothly during the final stages of our process. She also worked on marketing, creating the terrific and cheeky content you enjoyed in the run-up to opening for AS YOU LIKE IT.

ETR : Where do you call home?

Alara : "I've collected pieces of 'home' across Italy, Turkey, and Canada. With roots spanning three continents, I'm incredibly grateful to draw inspiration from all of these places."

ETR : What inspired you to join the AS YOU LIKE IT production team?

Alara : "The opportunity to work on Shakespeare in its original language and help bring a playful, modern adaptation of the story to life."

ETR : What's been the biggest challenge in this process?

Alara : "Being promoted from ASM to Stage Manager [at the start of tech] meant suddenly taking responsibility for rehearsals, props, transitions, logistics, and communication. It pushed me to adapt quickly, make confident decisions, and lead the process with clarity."

ETR : What has surprised you most about working on this production?

Alara : "How smoothly such a large team works together. With 20 people onstage and 21 behind the scenes, I expected far more chaos. Instead, everyone genuinely cares about the production and is always ready to support one another."

ETR : If audiences could see one behind-the-scenes moment, what would it be?

Alara : "My proud moment when I prepare all the love letters on the flower-shaped sticky notes. It's adorable and oddly satisfying!"

ETR : Describe this production in one word.

Alara : "Joyful."
