I have been involved in many projects since Sony came out with the VX1000 a DV tape camcorder released in the late 90s. During those years young cinematographers like me realised the dream of working with expensive cinema lenses using adapters to attach the lenses on the new digital 3CCD cameras. We did our best to make our images looking like film, strange enough Kodak film stocks were becoming m
ore and more similar to the more flat and crisp digital images. I was a camera assistant working on film for 5 years loading chassis then pulling the focus, how scary was to put your hands on an exposed negative film. Thanks to technology at 26 I filmed my first feature as Cinematographer, “Rahil’s secret” shot on Panasonic 100AE with Zeiss lenses, the film was released on cinemas in Italy. Today I am 38, I like to see the process of continuous change in our field and in ourself, I found this very exiting. I like the idea that today I can work on a film with famous talents, shoot a commercial for a high brand, shoot a deeply intriguing art film, work on a low budget independent film or on a creative documentary. Cinematography is expanding and embracing the forever changing technical landscape. I am happy to be working with creative directors and producers who embrace this view beyond the nature of the film we are making. Positivism is the lens through which I look at my work today, probably I was helped by the birth of my two daughters in these recent years.
