On October 13, I had the pleasure of giving the final talk of this year’s training series on colour knowledge for interior designers, architects, and creative professionals — a collaboration with Cromology Italia, leader in the production and sale of paints for the building industry in Italy, and arkitectureonweb, a platform for Italian architects and design professionals.

The series began in March, introducing Environmental Colour Design as an integral approach to the design of spaces. We explored how colour shapes our architectural environments, concluding with biophilic colour design as a meaningful, contemporary case study.

In April, we focused on colour selection and palette creation, moving beyond outdated and traditional harmony and contrast theories. We discussed how colour, when used consciously, can characterise spaces, enhance design projects, and foster wellbeing.

And finally, last week, we explored the emotional dimension of colour — the project beyond aesthetics. We reexamined colour meaning through its three properties and its semantic value across different cultural affiliations. The session ended with a dive into colour’s psychophysical effects and how they influence human behaviour and perception.

A heartfelt thank you to Leonardo Pelagatti from Cromology for the invitation, and to the hundreds of professionals who joined each session (around 500 registrants per talk!) — your questions and curiosity made every discussion richer.

I’m looking forward to continuing this collaboration next year — and to keep spreading colour literacy and its essential role in shaping the world around us.

Join us for Colour Literacy Forum 13: “Colour MIXconceptions: Comparative Mixing Processes”, which will take place virtually on October 10, 2025, from 11:00 AM to 12:30 PM ET.

This session—the third in the “Facts & Myths about Colour” series—will challenge common misconceptions about colour mixing. We’ll explore how paints, inks, and light interact in fundamentally different ways, and how our perception of colour is shaped not only by physical mixtures but also by human vision.

Featured Presentations

🔵 Paul Green-Armytage – “Colours and Mixing”
A deep dive into additive vs. subtractive mixtures, primary and complementary colours, and the ways mixing behaviours shift across different media.

🔵 Marjan Kooroshnia – “Colors in Motion: Designing With Change”
An exploration of smart pigments and responsive textiles that transform dynamically in response to temperature, light, and environmental changes.

The Colour Literacy Forum is a global, virtual platform for presentations and interactive dialogue aimed at rethinking and expanding colour education for the 21st century. 🌈🌱 Sustainable Colour Design Strategies

After three years of research, dialogue, and collaboration across design, colour, materials, and sustainability, my latest article, “Sustainable Colour Design Strategies: A framework for action”, has just been published in the prestigious Wiley journal ‘Coloration Technology’, of the Society of Dyers and Colourists.

Colour is everywhere in design — influencing perception, identity, and even waste. Yet, despite its impact on production, consumption, and sustainability, colour is still an underexplored dimension in sustainable design.

In this paper, I present the Sustainable Colour Design Strategies (SCDS) framework: 8 strategies and 40 concrete actions, designed to guide designers, educators, and industry stakeholders. The SCDS framework covers themes like sustainable colour mindsets, circularity, local identity, and bio-colour innovations. It is the result of a research-through-design approach, combining literature reviews, case study analysis, stakeholder interviews, and peer-review feedback.

Its goal is simple but ambitious: to bridge the gap between theory and practice, and to make sustainable colour decisions actionable in education, industry, and policy. I hope that this work can be inspiring and contribute to rethinking colour not just as an aesthetic choice, but as a lever for positive environmental and social change.

On Friday, September 13, I lectured a workshop called “Colour Research for Design” for master’s and doctoral students of the course “Experimental Processes and Language in Visual Design” of the Graduate Program in Design at the University of São Paulo, in Brazil.

The workshop lasted 3.5 hours and addressed first, an introduction to colour design, as a sub-discipline and contemporary and emerging field of knowledge. Then we delved into the actuality of colour research, and how to approach it starting either from a design need related to colour or from a colour need related to design, exemplifying with several real research projects that I have developed in the past. Towards the end of the workshop, we reviewed some of the current social and ethical issues the design discipline addresses and how colour can play a fundamental role in proposing meaningful, sustainable and people-based solutions. Students had time to discuss in teams how colour relates to their research topics and to propose new ways of working with colour.

I would like to extend my heartfelt thanks to the students who participated, to Professor Clice Mazzilli, coordinator of the course, for her invitation, and to her colleagues Gustavo Curcio and João Paulo Schlittler for the interesting conversation. Thanks to all for a very insightful and promising discussion.

On September 7th, Francesca Mattioli and I inaugurated in the city of Bracciano (Rome) our first research-based exhibition on the Teamwork Colour Matrix project, which we have been developing since 2019. The exhibition, entitled ‘noi, voi ed io: i colori della collaborazione’ (we, you and I, the colours of collaboration) consists of a data physicalization installation that investigates colour as a tool to communicate, through visuality, individual and collective experiences of teamwork in design education.

The Teamwork Colour Matrix, consists of a grid for the evaluation of the collective work (we), of the teammates (you) and the self-assessment of one’s work (I), over a given period, for example, during the development of a project. Using a palette of 8 versatile colours, each group member makes a colour representation of the collective work, selecting, coding and applying the colour in the matrix according to their perception of the lived experience. At the end of the exercise, each person shares with the others their vision of how the collective work went, relying on visual communication and colour as accessible and soft tools for dealing with sometimes difficult conflicts and conversations.

For this exhibition, after having proposed the exercise to more than 1,000 students mainly in digital mode, we presented our data exploration corresponding to 100 chosen matrices through their materialisation (data physicisation) for the first time in an artistic-gallery context. In addition, we propose a critical reflection on the production of scientific knowledge, which is often limited to numbers, highlighting the qualitative and unique dimensions of human experience.

We would like to warmly thank for inviting us to undertake this adventure, and the friends who helped us to make it possible: , Pieter Jan Stappers, and

On Thursday 6 June, I had the honour to present the Closing Lecture of the international conference Biocolours2024, in the Auditorium of the University of Helsinki, Finland.

My lecture entitled “Sustainable Colour Design Strategies: A Framework for Action” proposed a reflection through eight strategies on colour sustainability for design decision-making. The framework focuses on how design practice and design education should motivate a careful evaluation of a sustainable colour application, stimulating critical thinking and fostering concrete actions related to reuse, recycling, and recovering colours; colour circularity and how to include more colour-thinking in all the phases of the design process to achieve a sustainable future, among others.

I presented the findings of the first stage of my post-doctoral research conducted in 2023-2024, as Visiting Researcher of the Department of Excellence programme of Politecnico di Milano. I’ll be publishing these findings very soon, and more interesting things are to come.

Stay tuned!

PS. Thanks to the organisers and the Project for the invitation and for hosting this wonderful conference, and to Bintan Titisari and Samica Sadik for the photos.
