This international recognition celebrates a project rooted in heritage rehabilitation, adaptive reuse, and sustainable architecture, where existing buildings are respected as living parts of the city’s collective memory rather than replaced or erased.

This win reaffirms our belief that working with history — not against it — creates meaningful, responsible, and forward-looking architecture.

Architecture of Respect – A Historic House, Renovation, and Malta’s Iconic Piazza

For the past year and a half, ak Architects + associates has been involved in the restoration and renovation of a historic house on one of Malta’s most iconic piazza

Because of its prominent setting, our intervention has been minimal, contextual, and sustainable—preserving heritage while carefully integrating contemporary needs. Special attention was given to the outdoor façade lighting, designed in respect of the church, the piazza, the wider environment, and surrounding sources of light.

The owners, with their knowledge in architecture, heritage, and engineering, made the process smooth and collaborative, turning this journey into a true exchange of ideas and expertise.

Soon, this project of architecture, heritage, and restoration will reach completion.

Thanks to all our associates and new partnerships, we have had an incredibly creative and busy 2024. One of our favorite adaptive reuse projects is El Shalal Railway Station. It’s amazing to see it in person again NOW after exactly three years since its completion!

After three years, the railway stands proudly as a symbol of responsible heritage management, exceptional customer service, and completely sustainable contemporary design. We aim to keep captivating our customers while preserving Egyptian architectural history.

A comprehensive sustainable restoration and rehabilitation of a historical railway station in southern Egypt, built in 1914.

This was the first restoration and adaptive reuse project of a railway station from the 1900s in Egypt. Excited to breathe new life into this historical landmark!

The cataract town of El Shallal, located just southeast of Aswan, has a long and strategically significant history. As a trade hub linking Egypt and Sudan, it facilitated the flow of goods like henna and cotton through the Nile and railway.

We are dedicated to the restoration and revival of this architectural gem for the citizens of El Shallal. This project also highlights our commitment to safeguarding the future through sustainable development and investment in renewable energy, adhering to international standards.

The Seminars and Conferences Committee of the Architecture Division, headed by Eng. Fatima Sultan and coordinated by Eng. Mohamed Farouk is honored to invite you all to attend a seminar titled "Sustainable Restoration and Adaptive Re-use of Heritage Buildings," which will be presented by architect Ayman Khalil, an expert in Architecture, urban planning and sustainable Restoration of heritage buildings.

The seminar will be held at the headquarters of the Egyptian Engineers Syndicate on the sixth floor, Maghawry Hall, Cairo, on Sunday, October 20, 2024, at 6:00 pm.
