Applications are now open for the 2027 Alba Music Festival Composition Program! It is free to apply and open to composers and music creators from anywhere in the world and at any stage of career. Applications are open through December 15, and some limited financial aid is available. If you are a composer interested in an intensive and collegial musical experience in Italy, or know someone who might be, please have a look and share widely!

The program features an intensive week of music-making as part of the Alba Music Festival. Participants receive private composition lessons, take part in daily workshops and masterclasses, and have their music performed and professionally recorded by our Ensemble-in-Residence. For 2027, we are delighted to welcome Quartet ES as our Ensemble-in-Residence, with Jennifer Jolley and Eric Nathan as Composers-in-Residence, and Andrew Bishop and J. Anthony Allen joining our resident composition faculty.

Beyond the lessons, rehearsals, concerts, and workshops, the program offers the opportunity to spend a week immersed in the cultural life of Alba and Italy’s Piedmont region, a center for some of the worlds finest wine and food.

It gives us great pleasure to announce Quartet ES as the Ensemble-in-Residence for the 2027 Alba Music Festival Composition Program!

Bringing together violinists Anton Miller and Ertan Torgul, violist Rita Porfiris, and cellist Jennifer Kloetzel, this Iceland- and United States-based ensemble is known for its committed performances and dedication to new music. Quartet ES made its international debut at Reykjavík’s Harpa Concert Hall in 2018 and has held residencies in both Iceland and the United States. For its ambitious Uncertainty of Fate project, the quartet commissioned and recorded eighteen works by established and emerging composers. Its recent projects have included new quartets by Robert Carl and Elena Ruehr.

Quartet ES will work closely with our 2027 Fellows, bringing their music to life through rehearsals, performances, and professional recording sessions.

We are delighted that J. Anthony Allen will return as a member of the composition faculty for the 2027 Alba Music Festival Composition Program, and once again lead a workshop in music business and entrepreneurship!

A composer, producer, educator, and musical innovator, J.’s creative work ranges from orchestral scores and acoustic concert music to electronic dance music, film, television, and video games. His music has been performed throughout Europe, North America, and Asia, including work with the Minnesota Orchestra. He has also taught music production and technology to more than a million students worldwide. In 2011, he founded Slam Academy to make electronic-music education more accessible, and his recent work explores the fertile ground between acoustic and electronic music.

We have been hard at work preparing our 2027 program, and over the coming days, we are excited to introduce our outstanding roster of composition faculty and performers.

First up: Jennifer Jolley!

We are delighted to welcome Jennifer back to Alba, where she previously served as a member of our resident faculty in 2018. A terrific composer, conductor, and educator, Jennifer will join us as one of our Composers-in-Residence for the 2027 Alba Music Festival Composition Program.

Her works have been commissioned and performed by ensembles including the Dallas Winds, Dayton Philharmonic Orchestra, Vermont Symphony Orchestra, Left Coast Chamber Ensemble, and Quince Ensemble, and have been heard at venues including Carnegie Hall. A 2023 Fulbright Scholar to Egypt, she is Associate Professor of Music Theory and Composition at Lehman College and has taught composition at Interlochen Arts Camp since 2015.
