Wearing the Robes of the Future: Creativity, Care, and the Culture Gap - Lecture at the University of AkureyriOn 19 February, I gave a lecture at the University of Akureyri titled "Wearing the Robes of the Future: Creativity, Care, and the Culture Gap" — exploring how creativity and safer space cultures can develop our capacity to engage meaningfully with the future.Creativity is not just about outcomes, nor just about the process — it is an experience, and therein lies its superpower. It is an essential tool for fostering connection, helping us not merely know and understand facts, but to truly relate to them. Creativity is our tool for meaning-making.

Ekki lengur / No Longer / لَمْ تَعُد | National Gallery of Iceland"Ekki lengur / No Longer / لَمْ تَعُد" at the National Gallery of Iceland"The video No Longer is part of an immersive installation created for Skaftfell – Center for Visual Art in East Iceland in 2023. The work explores the experiences of forcibly displaced people and the concept of alienation. El Ansari has in her practice engaged with themes of exile and concepts of home and homeland. She left her home in Cairo in the aftermath of the Arab Spring revolts that took place in the Middle East and North Africa and later moved to Iceland, where she has worked both as a translator and as an artist. In the video, Sudanese poet and writer Moneim Rahama reads No Longer, a poem he wrote on 2023 about injustice and land dispossession. His voice recording is layered with a sound composition by Adam Świtała. The video brings together a montage of images created by El Ansari, inspired by her own experiences and the stories of people who have gone through forced migration. The artist wishes to thank Moneim Rahama, Adam Świtała, Piotr Pawlus, and Rania Berro for their collaboration. The work was made possible with a grant from Myndstef."

Glacial withnessThis peer-reviewed audio paper, co-authored by me with a wonderful team of colleagues involved in the Snæfellsjökull fyrir forseta campaign, is now available! It is best experienced using headphones."The paper goes beyond the concept of the »soundscape« as a wide and general metaphor (Ingold, 2007) seeking more meaningful and intimate relationships via sound, understood as a physical phenomenon of vibration, both audible and inaudible (Östersjö, et al., 2024). It questions the Western notion of music as a human (and) sonic practice, promoting listening as a creative act of becoming-with."Rawlings, A. It was an honour to talk about my doctoral research and the work we have been doing with prof. Helga Rut Gudmundsdottir to support immigrant families with young children in Iceland at the 60th anniversary of the EIMSKIP research fund at Landsbankinn. The event featured opening remarks from Jón Atli Benediktsson, rector of the University of Iceland, and Halla Tómasdóttir, president of Iceland. I deeply appreciate the opportunity to contribute to this important dialogue on research and its impact on society. Congratulations also to my colleagues Sóllilja Bjarnadóttir and Aysan Safavi on their remarkable work.

ISME World Conference 2024 starting soon in HelsinkiIn just a few days one of the biggest international events for music educators world-wide is going to begin: the World Conference of the International Society for Music Education (ISME). Bringing together researchers, teachers and musicians from more than 80 countries, it provides a unique opportunity to share and connect. This year I will have the pleasure of presenting a research paper and participating in one of the Presidential Sessions dedicated to the Singing Maps project, together with prof. Helga Rut Gudmundsdottir and our esteemed colleagues from Norway, Finland, Sweden and the Faroe Islands. I will also be chairing some of the sessions of the MISTEC commissions and participating in the discussion concerning the ISME Student Chapter—a great new initiative aiming to foster the international community of students and young researchers.
