The assignment sounded simple.
"Bring your hero to school."
Most children were excited.
Some brought their parents.
Others brought grandparents.
Teachers.
Police officers.
Firefighters.
But one little boy sat quietly at his desk.
Because his hero was deployed overseas.
When classmates asked who he was bringing, he smiled and said,
"My dad."
Even though he knew his father couldn't make it.
The event began.
One by one, heroes entered the room.
The boy tried not to look disappointed.
Then the classroom door opened.
A soldier stepped inside.
For a second, nobody noticed.
Except the little boy.
Suddenly he jumped from his chair and ran.
Because sometimes heroes don't wear capes.
Sometimes they wear Army boots.
