Trump Appears Visibly Unwell at G7 as Weak Handshake with Macron Sparks Fresh Concerns
Trump arrived in Évian-les-Bains, France, for the G7 summit appearing noticeably unwell, and his greeting with French President Emmanuel Macron quickly drew widespread attention.
What was expected to be a standard diplomatic exchange instead became an unusual moment. Trump extended a weak, lackluster handshake to Macron, showing little of the force or confidence typically associated with him. Given his long-standing reputation for using firm, assertive handshakes with fellow world leaders, the difference was striking.
During the meeting, Trump seemed tired, distant, and lacking energy. Instead of concentrating on key G7 issues, he spent time talking about a UFC event, even suggesting it was more popular than the World Cup. When he asked Macron whether he had watched the fight, the French president replied that he had not seen it live.
The optics became even more notable when Trump greeted Brigitte Macron shortly afterward. He suddenly appeared more energetic, engaging in his familiar prolonged handshake that lasted roughly 14 seconds. The vigor absent during his interaction with the French president seemed to return almost immediately when greeting Macron’s wife.
Trump’s right hand has shown visible bruising and discoloration for several months. The White House has repeatedly brushed aside questions about it, with Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt saying it is the result of frequent handshaking. Ahead of the meeting with Macron, the hand appeared to be covered with makeup.
At 80 years old, Trump arrived at one of the year’s most significant diplomatic gatherings looking, to many observers, as though he was not in good health. World leaders and the American public deserve transparency regarding the condition of the person representing the United States at the G7 summit.
