1 killed, 1 injured after VDC member opens fire in Udhampur

Udhampur, Aug 14 (KNO): A man was killed and another sustained serious injuries after a Village Defence Committee (VDC) member allegedly opened fire at them in the Moungri area of Udhampur district on Friday, officials said.

A senior police officer told the news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO) that the incident occurred in the morning when the two persons were travelling towards Damnot Police Post. During the journey, an argument reportedly broke out, following which the accused allegedly opened fire at them.

He said that one person was killed in the incident, while another sustained injuries. The deceased was identified as Baldev Singh, son of Karta Singh, and the injured as Romesh Singh, son of Nak Ram.

“All the persons involved in the incident are members of the VDC,” the official said, adding that police have taken cognisance of the incident and further investigation is underway.—(KNO)

SSP Shoket Hussain Shah Gets President’s Medal; 52 J&K Police Personnel Honoured

Srinagar, Aug 14, KNT: Senior Superintendent of Police Shoket Hussain Shah has been awarded the President’s Medal for Distinguished Service, while 52 Jammu and Kashmir Police personnel have been selected for police service medals on the occasion of Independence Day 2026.

According to the official force-wise list, the J&K Police tally comprises 38 Gallantry Medals, one President’s Medal for Distinguished Service and 13 Medals for Meritorious Service.

Shoket Hussain Shah, Senior Superintendent of Police, is the only J&K Police officer to receive the President’s Medal for Distinguished Service this year. His name appears at serial number 44 in the official list of PSM awardees.

The Gallantry Medal category accounts for the largest share of the J&K Police honours, with 38 personnel receiving the award. The recipients include officers and personnel from different levels of the force, including Deputy Inspectors General, Senior Superintendents of Police, Superintendents of Police, Deputy Superintendents of Police, Inspectors, Assistant Sub-Inspectors, Head Constables, SgCTs and Constables.

The Gallantry list also includes repeated recognition for some personnel. Deputy Superintendent of Police Sarfaraz Bashir has received the 2nd Bar to the Gallantry Medal, while Head Constable Rayeesh Ahmad Reshi, SgCT Ishtiaq Ahmed Khan and Assistant Sub-Inspector Mohinder Singh have been awarded the 1st Bar to the Gallantry Medal.

Among the senior officers receiving Gallantry Medals are Deputy Inspector General Shiv Kumar, IPS, Senior Superintendent of Police Shobhit D. Saksena, IPS, Superintendent of Police Nasir Ahmad, Superintendent of Police Divya D, IPS, Senior Superintendent of Police Mushtaq Ahmad and Deputy Inspector General Pande Rajiv Omprakash, IPS.

Thirteen J&K Police personnel as per the news agency Kashmir News Trust have also been awarded the Medal for Meritorious Service. The list includes Superintendents of Police Sandeep Kumar and Amit Gupta, Deputy Superintendents of Police Rajesh Sharma, Muzaffar Ahmad Shah, Kuljeet Singh and Sharat Chander Singh, along with Inspectors Shamim Ahmed, Vikram Singh and Mumin Ahmad Rather, Assistant Sub-Inspectors Bodh Raj and Mushtaq Ahmed, Sub-Inspector Manzoor Ahmad Gada and Constable Ashraf Gull.

The 52 police awardees therefore represent three different levels of recognition, with gallantry honours accounting for 38 awards, followed by 13 for meritorious service and one for distinguished service.

A separate award has gone to Vinod Kumar Sharma, Divisional Warden, Jammu & Kashmir, who has received a Medal for Meritorious Service under the Home Guard and Civil Defence category. He is not included in the 52-member J&K Police tally.

Thus, while 53 awards are associated with J&K if the Home Guard and Civil Defence awardee is also counted, the official number of J&K Police personnel honoured is 52.

51 J&K Police personnel selected for gallantry, meritorious service medals

Srinagar, Aug 14 (KNO): As many as 51 Jammu and Kashmir Police personnel have been selected for gallantry and meritorious service medals on the occasion of Independence Day 2026, according to the official honours list.

As per the details obtained by the news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO), the awardees include 38 recipients of the Medal for Gallantry (GM) and 13 recipients of the Medal for Meritorious Service (MSM). Besides, one J&K Home Guard and Civil Defence personnel has also been selected for the MSM.

Among the 38 gallantry medal recipients are senior police officers, including Deputy Inspector General Shiv Kumar, IPS; SSP Shobhit D Saksena, IPS; SP Nasir Ahmad; SP Mushtaq Ahmad; DIG Pande Rajiv Omprakash, IPS; and SP Divya D, IPS.

Deputy Superintendent of Police Sarfaraz Bashir has been awarded the second bar to the Medal for Gallantry, while Head Constable Rayeesh Ahmad Reshi and Selection Grade Constable Ishtiaq Ahmed Khan have been awarded the first bar to the GM.

The other GM recipients are Waseem Mohi-Ud-Din Lone, Manzoor Ahmad, Mudasir Ahmad, Ashak Hussain P, Kishore Kumar, Javid Iqbal Jan, Mohinder Singh, Sheeraz Ahmad, Surinder Paul, Ishtiyaq Ahmad Reshi, Tanveer Hussain Lone, Mudasir Ahmad Shah, Kalu Din, Adit Kumar Nad, Mohd Usman, Shabir Ahmad Malik, Manzoor Ahmad Ganie, Khurshid Ahmed Wani, Mushtaq Ahmad Shah, Ab Rashid Mir, Mohamad Shafi Banday, Abdul Rashid, Zahoor Ahmad, Zahoor Ahmad, Dheeraj Kumar, Shakir Hassan, Vikram Nag, Mushtaq Ahmad Khan and Tariq Ahmad.

Of the 1, 057 awards, 301 awards are related to Medal for Gallantry (GM), 92 for President’s Medal for Distinguished Service (PSM) and 664 for Medal for Meritorious Service (MSM).
