Ambedkar’s Fight Against Hereditary Slavery

On 3 August 1928, Dr. B. R. Ambedkar achieved a major milestone in the Bombay Legislative Council by taking a stand against the exploitative Mahar Watan system.

On this day, he was selected for the Bombay Provincial Committee connected with the Simon Commission, ensuring that the voices of the Depressed Classes were represented in discussions about India’s constitutional future.

He also introduced the Mahar Watan Bill to challenge a system that forced generations of Mahar community members into hereditary service and exploitation.

Babasaheb called for the destruction of these social “shackles” because dignity, equality, and freedom could not exist alongside inherited oppression.

A powerful chapter in Babasaheb’s lifelong struggle for social justice and human dignity.
