Jammu & Kashmir, August 15: The 79th Independence Day was observed across the Union Territory of Jammu & Kashmir with patriotic spirit but subdued celebrations. In view of the tragic cloudburst in Chishoti Village, Machail Nalla (Kishtwar), which claimed several lives, authorities cancelled all cultural programmes scheduled for the day as a mark of respect to the victims.
Despite the cancellation of cultural events, all government and private schools, colleges, and institutions hoisted the National Flag and organised brief ceremonies. Students, teachers, and staff paid tribute to the martyrs of the freedom struggle as well as the victims of the Kishtwar tragedy.
Across districts, officials unfurled the Tricolour, followed by short speeches and moments of silence. The decision to keep celebrations simple was welcomed by the public, reflecting unity, empathy, and shared grief across the UT.
