While my mom was in the hospital for many days ...a few weeks ago, I was sitting with her,
and Naia kulkarni ,our 11 years old too decided to be there with me.

As many of you know, we still haven’t given our daughter a phone or screens. So, when she has nothing much to do—or even when she is simply sitting around reading , writing stories , or skating.....
this is what she chooses to do in the hospital room 😃

I found this little habit of hers quite inspiring, and thought of sharing it with you all.

Not to show off, but simply to share a feeling… because I know this is something I certainly wasn’t doing at the age of 11.

It made me pause and think about how differently children grow when they are given the space ..to be ,to choose ,to say no ,..it's very important to teach kids not to become people pleaser
to find their own ways of being occupied, curious and creative.

Just a little moment that made me smile. 💜

Below as Above

Beneath the soil lies an entire food world—quiet, unseen, and alive.

In documenting these forest communities for decades n ,for my book
I encountered nearly 18 varieties of roots and tubers—air potatoes, elephant-foot yam, and many locally named varieties. Each carries its own season, taste, method of preparation.

Rich in starch, these humble foods have long been an important part of the diet, offering nourishment through the leaner months and preserving knowledge from one generation to the next.

Some are also part of ritual. Taro root is traditionally eaten during Diwali, bringing what grows beneath the earth into the seasonal and sacred calendar. And from these roots comes khatkhate and Sharkh a fascinating traditional preparation that transforms an underground crop into a dish of goan identity ( there are seven version of this mind you,)

What fascinated me was that these are not merely crops. They are repositories of biodiversity, food security, seasonal wisdom and ancestral knowledge—knowledge of what grows where, when it should be gathered, how it must be prepared, and how the earth becomes food.

The more I looked below, the more I understood what was above.

And that is why I call this Below as Above.

Some meetings are , almost like light.they arrive quietly

I had the most beautiful time meeting the people behind Vrinda Upadhyay founder of Upadhyaya Foundation Foundation and experiencing, firsthand, the warmth and spirit of this incredible team.

who looks after communications at the foundation, joined me at my table while I was having lunch and quietly sketched me without my even knowing. When he showed me the sketch, I had just one request — “You have to add the tattoo!” And he did. :)

Ma’am Vrinda the founder, who is also a classical singer, sang Raag Assavri i for me. She even read me handwritten poems — little pieces of herself that I will treasure.

Prakriti n janavi brought their own warmth and energy, deep intense discussion about my work n world ....☺️

A little trek. A few photographs. A sketch. A song. Handwritten poems. Conversations amidst nature.

And beyond all these beautiful moments is the meaningful work Vrindamam does in conservation, the environment and education, especially education for the girl child.

Sometimes, you meet people and leave with more than photographs.thankyou Nirmal Chahal kulkarni for insisting on joining on me this trip to mahadhai research station truly grateful ❤️ hope i got u strength luck n trust u needed .

Grateful for this lovely day with an amazing team. ❤️

A portrait is space beyond the face.

It is not only the person I photograph, but everything that surrounds them—the negative space, the positive space, the space above, the space below, the distance between the body and its surroundings.

A good portrait is not simply about capturing a face. It is about understanding how a person occupies space.

Sometimes, the space speaks as loudly as the person
does.
