The plot concerns the classic conflict of love and money. The miser Mirza Sakhawat wishes his daughter Azra to marry a wealthy old man, Aslam, who will accept her without a dowry, but she loves the penniless Nasir. MIrza himself has set his eye on young, impoverished Mariyam, whom his son Farrukh also loves. Much of the play’s action focuses on Mirza’s stinginess. Nasir and Mariyam are revealed to be Aslam’s long-lost children, and they are happily paired with the Mirza’s son and daughter by the play’s end, after Mirza insists that Aslam pay for both weddings.
Although Meri Jaan Ke Hi**er is usually considered to be a comedy, its tone is one of absurdity and incongruity rather than of gaiety.
