‘Whose Land Is It Anyway?’ Curated by Abhijeet Karwa (Abhijeet Karwa) brought together three artists, Taslim Jamal Sona (Taslim Jamal Sona) Nirbhay Raj Soni (Nirbhay Raj Soni) and Himmat Gayri (Himmat Gayri) whose practices reflect on landscape, memory, ecology, and belonging while asking timely questions about ownership, coexistence, and our relationship with the land.

Aksh Diwan Garg (Aksh) debut solo ‘Wedding Season | आप किसकी तरफ से?’ is a continuation of his famed ‘Wedding Series’, and also the last before he moves on to the next chapter in his practice

These oil paintings are a narrative series set in North India weddings. Rendered in warm pinks, purples, and sun-drenched yellows, the canvases are populated not by the bride and groom but by the guests. Aksh observes the wedding not as a celebration he belongs to, but as a theatrical performance he has always watched from just slightly outside the frame.

The exhibition takes its name from a deceptively simple exchange, not to answer it but to inhabit its ambiguity and find something luminous there. To make art from that question is itself an act of resistance. Because in a country where the Supreme Court, in October 2023, handed the question of q***r love and q***r persons’ right to marry back to the Parliament and the Karnataka High Court currently deliberates on the tax benefits for same s*x couples, the simple act of painting longing of recognised coupledom as art is political. It is rebellion dressed in the brightest colours.

Saviya Lopes x Zubaan Saviya’s practise is so much wider than art which exists in the gallery ecosystem. It looks at community engagement, challenges non ethical ways of working with wider groups and builds alternate knowledge systems that break neo-colonial attitudes. Thank you Zubaan Projects for consistently giving these perspective space to develop.

from Zubaan Projects | Last month in Bangalore, we kickstarted the Once Upon A Time fellowship, in collaboration with Parag. The five days of the workshop brought fellows from different states of the country to think, ideate, and collaborate on narrating women’s histories for young people.

1 - 5 Aksh*ta M Bhanj Deo (Aksh*ta M Bhanj Deo,Mayurbhanj) took Kumar Misal (Kumar Misal) to visit the Khiching Museum in early June, as part of the Mayurbhanj Residency in early June.

This visit showed that the museum lacked basic facilities like lights and basic upkeep due to which it was closed for the public, The local press took notice of this and reported on the issue. Kumar and Aksh*ta both spoke of the opportunity lost for the public in knowing more about their culture and heritage.

After the report went live, the museum authorities revamped the museum with new lights and carried out basic maintenance so that it could be reopened to visitors. This was a direct impact of Kumar and Aksh*ta’s visit, and it is incredibly heartening to know that, even in a small way, the visit led to a tangible impact on the ground.

6 - 9 During his time in Odisha, Kumar Misal also interacted with various local artist communities across Odisha.

10 - 11 Article in Mumbai Mirror (Mumbai Mirror) and Mid-Day (mid-day) explored how Kumar’s time at the residency allowed him to connect with and learn from Odisha’s rich craft traditions, including Sabai grass weaving, bamboo weaving, and Dhokra metal casting.

Rooted in the region’s rich cultural traditions, craft practices and communities, The Mayurbhanj Residency (The Mayurbhanj Foundation) brings contemporary artists and local artist clusters together in a space for exchange, learning and collaboration. The residency also aims to open up conversations around new ways of working to emerge as equal collaboration between contemporary and local artists.

As the first edition of the residency comes to a close, we are grateful to see these conversations travel beyond Mayurbhanj and receive recognition across platforms. At its heart, the residency remains deeply connected to the people, practices and cultural landscape that make Mayurbhanj what it is.
