Here's a rundown of the top stories on the Home Page of www.musicunplugged.in for this fortnight.

Have you ever wondered what the small etchings near the label on the record are? Reagan Gavin Rasquinha informs us that they are not decorative, but tell a small but interesting story to aficionados as well as the curious. Want to know more about this never heard topic, read our exciting Feature story that will reveal facts you never knew.

Earlier this year, music journalist Parag Kamani attended the screening of the rockumentary ‘One To One: John & Yoko’ as the closing film at this year’s Red Lorry Film Festival in Mumbai. Although the film never released officially in theatres in India, in his Film Review, Kamani states that the footage in the film focuses on John Lennon and Yoko Ono spending 18 months in New York City in a two-bedroom flat, which Lennon wants the viewer to believe was merely to watch TV.

If you’re a 70s music lover, you surely must have heard of the classic, "When You're In Love With A Beautiful Woman". In our Vinyl Review, we pull out Dr Hook's 'Sometimes You Win' LP. Although the above song is not on this album, it was later included on some of the copies of ‘Sometimes You Win’ maybe in the hope to increase album sales. The album nevertheless has songs like Better Love Next Time, S*xy Eyes and Years From Now, among others.

Like many kids from my generation, I got hooked onto Pink Floyd as a teenager while still in school. All it took was a few late-night listening sessions with my friends for the psychedelic rock band to become one of my all-time favorites. Their film, ‘Pink Floyd: The Wall’, that holds a special appeal to me as a movie fan. Completing 33 years this year of its release, I decided to take a look back at the DVD Release and feature this great film.

The final concert of the Spring 2025 season of the Symphony Orchestra of India (SOI) culminated with a performance on 15th February by Sir Mark Elder, one of Britain’s most acclaimed conductors. On his debut visit to the country, in an exclusive interview the 77 year old shares about his experience with the SOI, his early days in music, music education and much more.

Lastly, in our CD Review we spin 'The Cosmos Rocks - Queen + Paul Rodgers', (2008) that is filled with brand new material by Brian May, Roger Taylor, and Paul Rodgers in dedication to legendary front man Freddie Mercury. The band still feel his presence strongly more so on the album that is filled with influences of the man who they called Fred.

With the music festival season in full bloom, one of India’s leading dating apps, finds that Singles discover the art of finding love in the rhythm of the night. Read all about this Valentine's Day special in our lead Feature stories this fortnight on www.musicunplugged.in

On that note, when ticket bookings opened for Coldplay, it saw a frenzy, apparently with over 12 lakh people queuing online. Our regular writer Parag Kamani, says that getting tickets was as if the applicant had won a lottery. Kamani who attended Coldplay's concert gives an accurate account of his experience at the much awaited spectacle in our Concert Review.

Kamani also shares his views on Indie singer and songwriter Shriya Rao's new EP called ‘In A Box’, featuring four songs in our Digital Album Review. Rao's songs, says Kamani, depict a typical teenager’s lost-and-found love(s), often resulting in brief acceptance, but more of a heartbreak of longevity evoking obvious emotional feelings that Shriya has been able to capture with her often moody and introspective lyrics and melody.

In celebrating the 50th anniversary of Wings’ fourth studio album, ’Venus And Mars’, Parag Kamani one again takes the lead in doing a Vinyl Review of the album, bringing to forth the beauty of this album which is being re-issued on 21st March 2025. Kamani who owns the “original” album brought out by The Gramophone Company Of India, says that this album remains his prized possession.

In our DVD Review, we pick 'Adele - Live at The Royal Albert Hall', which was recorded on 22nd September 2011, in her London hometown before throat problems sidelined her indefinitely. This CD/DVD set offers a brilliant snapshot of an unguarded Adele just as fame is setting in for her. Bask in the lonesome sensuality of the voice that's captivated the world. The songs come from her two albums ‘19’ (2008) and ‘21’(2011), which has the cream of her best work that will leave you spellbound.

Arjun Kanungo was one of the panelist at All About Music conference in August 2024. Kanungo is not just a singer now, but an entrepreneur, forming his own company with collaborations in Japan and investing his efforts to promote indie music. In an exclusive Interview, he recounts the making of his two albums, his tryst with Japan, and his future plans including his latest work.

Our round up this fortnight on www.musicunplugged.in has lots to look forward to.

Contributor Meraj Hasan, pays a bio - lyrical tribute to Kris Kristofferson who passed away on 28th September. Hasan says that while the man wore multiple hats, for him, the hat that made him shine the brightest was that of a ‘songwriter’. In his Feature story, Hasan, pulls out the lyrics of some of Kristofferson's major songs.

American rock band Jefferson Starship are celebrating their 50th anniversary this year, and what better way to commemorate the event, than to feature one of their best works. In our Vinyl Review, Parag Kamani picks up ‘Red Octopus’, their 1975 album, named probably due to the band’s eight-member line-up (“octopus” in the title for its eight musical arms). Kamani gets you all the details on this brilliant album.

Boyband The Wanted were in Mumbai earlier this year for a concert organised by KCT Entertainment. The British pop boy band consists of Max George, Siva Kaneswaran, Jay McGuiness, Nathan Sykes and the late Tom Parker. Read our exclusive interview with Siva Kaneswaran and Max George who performed for their fans at the Dublin Square, Kurla, Mumbai.

Lady Gaga is in the news for her outstanding performance in 'Joker 2', so we thought of pulling out from our DVD shelf, 'Lady Gaga - Behind the Poker Face', a bare all of Lady Gaga that features a unique and totally uncensored profile of Gaga and her work.

In our CD Review, we check out Adam Lambert's ‘For Your Entertainment’. Lambert, an American Idol second-placed contestant, brings a wonderful collection of intoxicating tracks that move from electro pop / disco / rock to powerful, emotion-laden ballads. Worth a listen.

Our Book Review by Dr Resham Satyani, reviews ‘THE BOLD, BALD TRIO & 50 Other Inspirational Stories’ by author Ladislaus Louis D' Souza. The book is a heart-warming collection of short stories that leave a lasting impression. Written in simple, accessible English, this book is a treasure trove of wisdom, offering readers a delightful journey through tales rich in values and steeped in moral lessons.

So that's all there is on the home page of www.musicunplugged.in Do check out our other sections, including our newly introduced Video Interviews, Indian and International Music News and lots more.

India recently witnessed a spectacular celebration of melodic techno and house music as Ukrainian DJ Korolova wrapped up her highly-anticipated 3 city Electric Sunsets Tour in India. In our fortnightly update on www.musicunplugged.in and in our Concert Review, we dig into the experience of Korolova's massive EDM concert in Mumbai.

If Korolova gave a power packed performance, the 8th edition of All About Music packed a punch and saw some well-known faces in the music industry come together for a 3 day music conference where anyone remotely connected with music was present. Our contributor, Kiran Holkar who attended all three days, reports on the annual conference in our Feature story.

In our Vinyl Review, Parag Kamani, who has since been regularly contributing to www.musicunplugged.in since the last few months, recalls his days of listening to the album 'By Numbers' - The Who when as a young boy he listened to a single track from it, Squeeze Box, at a two-hour concert titled ‘The Evolution of Mr. Rock’ featuring Madhukar Dhas at Mumbai’s Sophia Bhabha Auditorium in 1976. Now years later, he gives you a full review of The Who's 'By Numbers' album.

In our Digital Album Review section, Kamani takes a look at Tom Schuman's 9th studio album expressively titled 'I Am Schuman'. For those who do not know, Schuman was the co-leader, composer, and arranger of the 13 time Grammy-nominated contemporary jazz group Spyro Gyra, becoming the band’s keyboardist while 16 years old. Read the very indepth review of this album.

He has played for the Queen of Denmark Margrethe II, the President of Kazakstan, the Queen of England, the Russian President, the Pope to the King of Norway. Meet Ahmet Baran who plays the Qanun and performed in Mumbai in May this year. We met the man for an exclusive interview, to know more about the enchanting Qanun and his life journey.

Lastly in our DVD Review, we watch Duran Duran's Sing, Blue, Silver - 1984 tour Documentary, and give our take on this film that has recordings from their 1984 US/Canadian tour woven together that contains all their classic songs too.

So folks, that's all there is on the Home Page of www.musicuplugged.in But do log on and check out our other sections like International and Indian Music News, Gig alerts, and lots more.

In our fortnight update on www.musicunplugged.in music journalist Parag Kamani takes us back in time with The Eagles as he pens a Vinyl Review of The Eagles 'One of these Nights'. The album is notstalgic in many ways and is packed with classics we have grown up listening to.

Other than that, Kamani also checks out guitar virtuoso Amyt Datta's new album 'Electric', in our CD Review and says that the Kolkata based guitarist offers fifty minutes of sparkling instrumental magic as Datta laces together his complex melodies using a modicum of effects on his guitar, supported by tightly set arrangements created for the band.

In our Interview section, we have pianist Eliane Elias who is regarded as one of the top jazz pianist and vocalists in the jazz world. Early this year, we met up with the Grammy award winning Brazilian artist who performed her brand of jazz at the Tata Theatre on Thursday 30th May 2024.

In our Film Review we give you 'Five Reasons to watch ‘Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny’, which opened in theaters last year. Starring the legendary Harrison Ford, the film will be Ford's last film in the epic forty year old franchise.

In our DVD Review, we pull out 'Hannah Montana and Miley Cyrus Best of Both Worlds Concert', a concert that fans still love and swear by. The concert film is a great experience to watch and gives you a backstage pass to watch Miley Cyrus with a special appearance by the Jonas Brothers and loads of bonus features.

Lastly, we bring to you a real-life dating app, showing how music connects people and has become cupid's arrow. A must read.

So that's all there is on the Home Page of www.musicunplugged.in but there's lots to check out from Music and Trade News, Gig Alerts, Photo Gallery and much more.

What’s the first visual that comes to mind when you hear deadmau5? His Mau5head, right? It is more than just a fashion statement—it's a symbol of his identity.

This fortnight in our Feature story on www.musicunplugged.in we dive into what makes the deadmau5 the quintessential Mau5head. The artist who performed on 12th July, 2024 in Mumbai gave an electrifying evening filled with ground-breaking music and spectacular visuals.

Other than that, in our CD Review, we also pull out 'Rated R' an album by saucy Barbados native Rihanna, who once gave us mega hits like 'Disturbia', 'Pon De Replay' and 'Umbrella'. The twelve and a half R& B – pop tracks are not the dance type for those looking for her trademark work which she is known for, rather we have an album that has some of her good work that you just cannot ignore.

Our DVD Review packs a punch with 'The Beatles from Liverpool to San Francisco', a black and white documentary that explores the rise of the world’s most famous band, from their humble beginnings in Liverpool and faltering performances at the Cavern Club, to the group becoming the most famous band in history. This is awesome stuff for Beatles historians out there.

At 71, Padma Shri awardee Remo Fernandes known for several breakout hits in the country rocked the house at the St Andrews auditorium, Bandra, with his band The Microwave Papadums on 15th August 2024, when the Goan rocker performed in aid of Kripa Foundation’s 43rd anniversary. In an exclusive interview prior to his performance, we chatted with the singer on his love affair with his home state Goa, life in Portugal, his tryst with Bollywood, Mother Teresa, and of course his music.

In our Vinyl Review, we have "Time Pieces", a single-disc collection of Eric Clapton's solo hits and includes hits like 'I Shot the Sheriff', 'After Midnight', 'Wonderful Tonight', his collaboration with Derek and the Dominos on Layla, and Co***ne (Live). The compilation provides a good introduction for neophyte Clapton fans, especially those who just want copies of his '70s hits.

Lastly in our Concert Review, music journalist Parag Kamani attends a concert of Chennai-based Amrit Ramnath and his band at the Jio World Centre, BKC, Mumbai, on 22nd August, 2024 and gives his feedback on Ramnath's performance in his review titled, 'Digging deEP into Amrit Ramnath’s 100,000 dreams'.

So that's all there is on our Main Page on www.musicunpluged.in . But do visit the site for lots more of Music and Trade News, Gig Alerts, Chart ratings and our Photo Gallery of events held during the last few months.

In our fortnight music update on www.musicunplugged.in and in our Feature story, we profile the band and also go through their new album.

Besides that, in our Book Review, Dr Resham Satyani pulls out the true life story of Eddie Jaku who survived the horrors of Auschwitz and Buchenwald. The book 'The Happiest Man on Earth: The Beautiful Life of an Auschwitz Survivor', is a moving memoir that recounts Jaku's experiences as a holocaust survivor and his journey to finding happiness.

In our DVD Review, we have rocker Santana's 'Live by Request', that brings together a whole series of concerts for an American television channel, A&E Network. In this set, Santana plays to a smaller, more intimate, theatre venue with all his hits like 'Oye Como Va', 'Black Magic Woman' to 'Evil Ways' and many more. Worth a watch.

Our Vinyl Review has English rock band Status Quo's 16th studio album 'Back to Back', that features four singles, 'Ol Rag Blues', 'A Mess of Blues', 'Marguerita Time' and 'Going Down Town Tonight', top line songs that made a mark for a band that sadly disbanded soon after the album release. The band got instant fame years later in India for their hit 'In The Army Now'.

In our Interview section, we meet up with South African native T**i Luzipo who performed earlier this year on 20th April at the 4th Edition of Banyan Tree’s World Jazz Festival. Alongwith the Thapelo Khumisi Trio, Luzipo performed a set based on South African Jazz Legacy pianist and composer Abdullah Ibrahim and American pianist Horace Silver. The interview charts her journey from a young singer to being one of the top SA singers today.

No one would've thought that Take That would ever reunite. But the boyband put down their ego and reunited for an album, naming the album ‘Progress’. Our CD Review has all the info you need on this 90s boyband's album. Read On.

So that's it on the main homepage of www.musicunplugged.in but there's a lot more if you visit Music and Trade News, Gig Alerts and of course the latest Music Chart Ratings. So log on and Explore Your Music.
The boys who once came into the limelight way back in 1990s, have completed 20 years of making music, even though it meant a break in between, wherein each went their own away with successful and not so successful solo careers. Sadly, on their sixth studio effort, the band makes a Christmas tree style trimming of their ballads, a genre that had won them scores of teenage fans. Their new work is in the new direction, indicating their changing shape….. musically.

On World Photography Day tdoay, here are some photos of Maestro Zubin Mehta conducting the Symphony Orchestra of India (SOI) at a private rehearsal on Saturday morning at the Jamshed Bhabha Theatre, NCPA. The SOI played the music of Johann Strauss II with pieces like Die Fledermaus, Tritsch-Tratsch-Polka, Op. 214, Frühlingsstimmen, Op. 410 (‘Voices of Spring’) accompanied by Soprano Chen Reiss, Kaiser-Walzer, Op. 437 (‘Emperor Waltz’), among many other beautiful pieces.
The music brought back memories when as a youngster my family and I, used to listen to the music of the Austrian composer. Watching the SOI performing these pieces live conducted by Zubin, was truly nostalgic and reliving the magic of Strauss.
A few days earlier on 14th August, the 88 year old maestro addressed the media at the Jamshed Bhabha Museum.

Dubai based Meraj Hasan was fortunate to watch the late (22nd July 2024) blues singer John Mayall perform at the Mahindra Blues Festival in Mumbai. Hasan states that even at 84, Mayall was nothing short of incredible with an enthusiasm of a 20 year old who has just discovered the joys of this crazily beautiful genre called blues. Read the tribute story in our Features story.

As we write this, India has bagged 3 Olympic medals. In our Film Review section, we pick five must-watch sports movies based on real-life champions. With Kartik Aaryan’s ‘Chandu Champion’ released in mid June, it's the perfect time to get inspired by real-life sports heroes.

Jazz trumpeter Ilya Serov celebrated Valentine’s Day earlier this year in Mumbai. The Texas based 37 year old guitar player and singer, also plays an instrument called the Jazzohorn. On his visit, we met up with the award winning trumpeter before his show at the Tata Theatre, NCPA. Read our exclusive Interview with the American musician.

Jennifer Lopez is a rare multitalented hottie with a long-lasting career who is still making music. In our CD Review we check out her album 'Rebirth', which is an introspective look at her life and her second and third albums. J. Lo collaborates with several songwriters and producers like Rodney Jerkins, Rich Harrison, Fat Joe and her then latest in line husband, Marc Anthony.
