How Allama Shibli Nomani’s Meeting with Sir Syed Ahmad Khan Changed History

10/06/2026

Born in June 1857 into a Muslim Rajput family, Muhammad Shibli—later known as Allama Shibli Nomani—grew up in an environment shaped by faith, learning, and intellectual curiosity. Named after the renowned Sufi saint Sheikh Abu Bakr Shibli of Baghdad, he inherited a rich legacy of scholarship. His father, Sheikh Habibullah, was a landlord, trader, and lawyer who embraced modern education under the influence of Sir Syed Ahmad Khan. Shibli received his early education from distinguished scholars and later studied under Maulana Farooq Chiryakoti, whom he credited for shaping his intellectual world and love for Persian literature.

Did you know that two of the most influential figures in Islamic scholarship and India's intellectual history trace their lineage to a noble family that migrated from Iran to India? The descendants of Shah Sher-ul-Mulk gave birth to two remarkable personalities: Shah Waliullah Muhaddith Dehlawi and the renowned freedom fighter Allama Fazl-e-Haq Khairabadi.

According to historical traditions, Shamsuddin settled in Rohtak, where his lineage later produced Shah Waliullah. His brother Bahauddin settled in Badaun, and from this family emerged Allama Fazl-e-Haq Khairabadi in 1797. His lineage is traditionally traced through 33 generations to the second Caliph, Hazrat Umar ibn al-Khattab (RA).

Watch this fascinating historical journey.

Even today, the shrine of Allama Fazl-e-Haq Khairabadi stands in the Andaman Islands as a living reminder of the sacrifices made during the struggle against British rule. The echoes of the failed War of Independence of 1857 seem to linger around this historic site. Visitors from different faiths come to pay their respects to this great scholar and freedom fighter. During a visit by the Voice of Urdu team, an inspiring sight emerged: non-Muslim visitors outnumbered Muslims, sharing in the community meal and expressing deep reverence at the shrine. His legacy continues to unite people beyond religious boundaries.

Allama Fazl-e-Haq Khairabadi's brilliance was evident from a very young age. Though he came from a privileged background and traveled to lessons on an elephant, his teacher Shah Abdul Aziz taught him the value of knowledge and humility by refusing to teach him when servants carried his books. By the age of 13, Fazl-e-Haq had mastered the traditional sciences and soon memorized the Holy Quran. His extraordinary intellect became famous when an Iranian scholar, Mir Baqir, reportedly left Delhi without debating Shah Abdul Aziz after witnessing the remarkable scholarship of the young Fazl-e-Haq.

In October 1859, Allama Fazl-e-Haq Khairabadi arrived in the Andaman Islands aboard the ship Fire Queen as one of 97 prisoners exiled by the British. Despite harsh conditions, he continued his scholarly work and amazed British officer Colonel J.C. Haughton with his extraordinary memory and knowledge. Impressed by his intellect and character, Haughton recommended his release. While his son Maulvi Shams-ul-Haq struggled tirelessly for his freedom, fate intervened. When the release order finally arrived in August 1861, it was too late. His son reached Andaman only to find his father's funeral procession. A poignant chapter of sacrifice and scholarship.

On 30 January 1859, Allama Fazl-e-Haq was arrested for issuing a fatwa of jihad against British rule and brought to Lucknow for trial. Refusing legal representation, he defended himself in court. When a witness attempted to withdraw earlier testimony, Allama courageously admitted that the fatwa was indeed his and declared that he still held the same views. His honest confession left the court with no option but to convict him. On 4 March 1859, he was sentenced to transportation for life ("Kala Pani") and exiled to the Andaman Islands, becoming a symbol of conviction, integrity, and sacrifice.
