Black cormorants and darters are both dark, fish-eating water birds that swim low and dry their wings in the sun, but you can tell them apart by their bills and neck shapes. In flight, a darter shows a cross-like shape due to its long neck and long tail. A cormorant has a shorter tail and heavier body. Cormorants catch and swallow fish directly. Darters impale fish underwater, bring them to the surface, toss them in the air, and catch them head-first.
