JAGADDHATRI PUJA of KRISHNAGAR In Hinduism, Devi Jagaddhatri is a form of Devi, the Supreme Goddess. Her worship is more common in West Bengal than the other parts of India.

Jagaddhatri Puja in Krishnagar, Nadia and Chandannagar, Hoogly have a special socio-cultural celebration. In Bengal it is popularly believed that Maharaja Krishnachandra started Jagaddhatri Puja. According to the most popular, in 1757 Maharaja Krishnachandra was in Mongir Fort imprisoned by Nawab Mir Jafar because of his part in British victory in Palassey. He was released just too late to be at h

ome in time of Durga Puja which distressed him greatly. On his way to home Maharaja had a dream of an armed Goddess sitting on a lion. She told him not to worry that he had been unable to worship her, but to do so exactly one month later in the form that she was now assuming. Thus Maharaja Krishnachandra Roy introduced Jagaddhatri Puja in Bengal. Then Indranarayan Cowdhury, Maharaja Krishnachandra's friend and the deewan of French-Chandannagar introduced Jagaddhatri Puja in Chandannagar.
