Last night was a horrible experience. Our vocalist, Kendy, was attacked by a group of miscreants (around 6–7 people with their faces covered) in what appeared to be an attempted murder. They used knives or sharp tools and targeted his head and face. The incident happened after our show at the Imphal Indie Festival – 2nd Edition, held at Wahyum Eco Resort, Taorem. Kendy and Kennyson Laitonjam had stepped out from the green room to receive some friends. At that moment, a few people approached them requesting to take photos. Suddenly, they attacked Kendy’s head and face. Kennyson tried to defend him but could not handle the situation alone. Kennyson shouted loudly for help, after which the attackers fled the scene quickly. The incident was clearly well planned. Many people were present around the festival entrance area and witnessed what happened. Several people ran after the attackers, but they managed to escape.
This raises serious questions:
Why are such acts being committed against artists?
Who are these people?
Is this driven by jealousy?
Or is it because we sing songs that speak about political failures and systemic issues?
What does this mean for the future of our society?
For our youth?
For artistic freedom?
Or is there a group of people who want to rule through fear, violence, and suppression, silencing voices that dare to speak the truth?
