​In the studio world, we call this a Sub-Kick. It is the ultimate proof that transduction is a two-way street: a speaker moves air when you feed it electricity, but it also generates electricity when air (sound) moves it!
​Why not just use a standard kick mic?

It all comes down to Diaphragm Mass:

​In a real room, Pre-Delay is the tiny gap of time between the initial sound and when it first hits a wall and bounces back to you. Mastering this one setting is the key to creating a professional, 3D soundstage.
​How it works:

By increasing the Pre-Delay, you decouple the "dry" sound from the "wash" of the reverb. This creates a small window where the initial attack reaches the listener's ear first, followed milliseconds later by the ambient tail.
