The Mechanics of the Envelope

It’s easy to group all four ADSR parameters together, but they operate on two completely different measurements.
Attack, Decay, and Release are all time-based controls measured in milliseconds or seconds. They dictate how fast a sound rises, drops, and fades out.
The single outlier in the group measures volume level, expressed in decibels. It determines the exact volume level your sound rests at after the initial attack and decay phases finish, holding that steady level for as long as the note is held down.

Dialing in a super-fast attack time (0 ms to 5 ms) on a drum compressor forces the circuit to clamp down the millisecond a peak crosses the threshold. This instantly squashes the initial stick hit, click, or transient crack, killing the natural bite of your kick or snare before it ever gets a chance to cut through the mix.

If your drums feel pushed to the back of the soundstage and lack impact, back off your attack setting to around 30 ms to 50 ms.
