TODAY : A screening and panel discussion.
STATE ART GALLERY : 3 and 4.30 pm
Kalakriti Art Gallery in association with the Kalaa Collective.

( I would like to specially recommend this event as one of the not to be missed events of the ongoing Krishnakriti Festival of Art and Culture. )

3 pm DOCUMENTARY Bade TV Walla" ( 30 mins)

4 30 pm. PAST PRESENT AND FUTURE : Cinema and the digital landscape. Selvaggia Velo, Raj Pippala and Samuel Berthet.

Panel discussion on cinema and the new digital technologies that have changed film making and film viewing for ever. The " screen" has certainly changed radically both in size and techniques : from 16mm to 35, from CinemaScope to 3D, from sitting in a grand old theatre sinking into a plush red seat to watch Dulhaniya Dilwalwe Dulhaniya Jayenge for the umpteenth time to holding a super action movie in the palm of your hand......

Expect a riveting and yes -!even emotion charged - discussion from an Indian filmmaker a French film critic and Selvaggia Velo curator and Festival Director of one of the oldest Indian Film festivals abroad - the River to River Florence - as talk ranges from from nostalgia for the graininess of a masterpiece like Citizen Kane, the BXW slickness of Hitchcocks Rear Window, the dramatic advent of colour - and then bang ; mind blowing innovations like CGI and special FX. This is the present. So what's the future of story telling going to be like?

A talk by India's best know "birdman" and author of many definitive books including Birds of the Indian Sub Continent ; a noted conservationist and biodiversity expert, Grewal lives between Delhi and Dehradun.

Zafar Futehally who died last year on August 11, was an Indian naturalist and conservationist who was also known for his work with the Bombay Natural History Society, Mumbai. During his position at the BNHS and the World Wildlife Fund he was able to lobby for action, chiefly by influencing the then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. His letters to the government helped in the establishment of Karnala bird sanctuary in Raigad in the 1960s, instead of being earmarked for industrial development. In the 1970s, he supported Dillon Ripley and the Smithsonian Institution for a project that proposed to radio-collar and study tigers in India.

The room was elegant, with a view of the garden from large, curtained windows. As afternoon turned to dusk, people came in one by one and then in twos and threes. Tea, cookies and delicious little patty were served. The hall started filling and more and more chairs were added. The screening of the best ad films in the world 2015, a selection handpicked by Anvar Alikhan, film buff and critic and ad man, from the ones that won and the ones that didnt though they were almost as good, turned out to be a great experience for the audience who sat through spell bound, but also for us, the team at Kalaa Collective.Anvar was at his most relaxed, and delivered flawlessly. The films were cutting edge, packed with both emotional moments and cinematic excellence. The most rewarding moment comes when someone comes up and asks, when are you having the next event? Adding to the experience was wonderful ambience and service by the Taj Krishna hospitality team. We began on time and ended on time, another source of satisfaction. Here is a mail from someone who came, that says it all....Thank you to everyone who made the evening a success. Just as a film needs an audience, so does an event. The audience's appreciation makes the event.

Dear Parvati

Thank you so much for giving us an opportunity to view some of the best ads in the past year. Needless to say we had a wonderful evening and without this screening wouldn't have even known of some of these master pieces. It was yet again another flawless evening organized by Kalaa Collective and all your hardwork and enthusiasm is seen in every bit of the evening.. You folks continue to amaze me🙏

Truly enjoyed our evening.

Thanks again
Aparna

CANNES : THE INDIAN CONNECTION.

Historically, Indian films have been well-received at Cannes although the prizes have dropped off since the Nineties. In 1946, Chetan Anand's acclaimed Neecha Nagar shared the top prize (now known as the Palme d'Or) with David Lean's Brief Encounters. In 1952, V Shantaram's Amar Bhoopali won the award for Best Sound Recording. Bimal Roy's socio-economic tour de force Do Bigha Zameen won the Prix Internationale in 1954. The next year, his Biraj Bahu and the Raj Kapoor-produced Boot Polish were both screened in competition. Baby Naaz won a special award for her performance in Boot Polish. In 1956, Satyajit Ray's Pather Panchali put India on the world cinema map for good with the prize for Best Human Document. In 1957, Rajbans Khanna's documentary on Buddha scored a jury prize. In 1983's Mrinal Sen's Kharij won a jury prize and in 1988, Mira Nair's Salaam Bombay! took home both the Camera d'Or and the Audience Prize. Shaji N Karun's Piravi received a special mention the next year. Murali Nair's Marana Simhasanam's Camera d'Or in 1999 was the last Indian film to bring home an award from Cannes.

This year, Indian films like Anurag Kashyap's Raman Raghav 2.0, starring Nawazuddin and Vicky Kaushal, and the Kabir Bedi-narrated documentary Mount of Excellence will be screened. Six Bengali short films including Anirban Guha's Elixir and Abhiroop Basu's Afternoon with Julia will also be screened at Cannes.
