Outpost OUTPOST is a visual disquisition on spontaneous individual expression in a rapidly homogenising glob There is therefore a double dispossession at play here.

Artist Samar Singh Jodhaโ€™s latest enterprise is a visual disquisition on a global culture where individual aesthetic notions are framed by commercial interests, and homogenised to such a degree by mass media that spontaneous individual expressions often emerge as accidental bi-products of non-aesthetic pursuits. He highlights this unusual state of affairs via a pictorial trope of discarded contain

ers fashioned into habitat by miners in Indiaโ€™s pristine northeast. The fact that Jodha foregrounds his work with a people given to excavating precious minerals from the earthโ€™s womb to keep the engines of the same mass culture and industry running, adds poignant irony to his endeavour. The interplay of narratives represented by a broken people and their robust expression unravels the threads of a global technopoly that promises a rosy future to many of us via rapid innovation, while simultaneously condemning many others to centuries-old regression. In deploying photographic imagery as the foundation stone of this work, Jodha summons a visual discourse that is rooted in documentary practice, yet is scarcely mimetic of that art form. As a seasoned artist, he is all too aware of its diminished power in the post-modern era. The sliver of optimism in this work is a notion that art-making is too precious a gift to be restricted only to the virtuoso. Panels: Archival Inks Mild Steel/Brass/Copper

At a recent student gathering, a thought provoking question arose: How do we define an artist? Is it based on conventional practices, a few specific skills, or a broader approach?

During discussions with fellow students, we discovered varied perspectives on what constitutes an artist. Many agreed that an artist is someone who shares their work. This journey can start in local settings, like schools or cafรฉs, and evolve into exhibitions in galleries or even international biennales.

However, does showcasing your work truly define you as an artist? Can one be an artist without being exhibited, published, or collected? An artist might also be someone who practices their craft, be it performance art, painting, or mentorship, without adhering to traditional outputs.

Ultimately, our conversation led us to a comforting conclusion: being labeled an artist doesn't solely rely on public recognition or commercial success. Art is about expressing our inner voice. If you choose to share your work, thatโ€™s your decision; if you donโ€™t, it doesnโ€™t diminish your identity as an artist. What truly matters is the passion behind the practice, not the accolades or market validation.

What should you ask an artist? (By the way, this is not limited to painters.) As non-creative practitioners, we often find ourselves curious about the intricate thoughts behind their art. While the outcome may seem clear, the process involves a complex interplay of environment, emotional turmoil, and sometimes even numbness or frustration.

Artists are driven by diverse motivations, but true reflection lies in their honesty toward their craft. It transcends mere output, fame, or financial gain; itโ€™s about what genuinely inspires them. Is their work rooted in the pursuit of beauty, or are they addressing a more profound issue? Do they explore themes of poetry, human experience, suffering, or social commentary?

Engaging with an artist about these deeper layers can unveil the rich emotional landscape that fuels their creativity, providing a glimpse into the heart of their practice. By asking the right questions, one can better understand the profound connections between their experiences and their output.

There is a certain beauty and strength in weakness as some may say. But sometimes inequity between people brings only sorrow. Such is the case of domestic violence, an acute yet so often unspoken problem all over the world.
