DAY 10 | Shardiya Navratri 2026
VIJAYADASHAMI | THE TRUTH THAT WAS ALWAYS ONE
Mahishasura's real power was never his armies.
Most tellings of the story focus on the battle, the weapons, the warriors, the divine intervention. But the Devi Mahatmya is describing something far more precise than a military victory, and if you read it only as a war story you miss the teaching that makes it one of the most extraordinary texts ever written about the nature of the self.
Mahishasura could change form.
Every time she came close to defeating him, he became something else. The buffalo became a lion. The lion became a man. The man became an elephant. The elephant became the buffalo again. He was the supreme master of false identity, the entity that could never be pinned to one true form because it had no true form, only an infinite sequence of assumed ones. He was not defeated by any individual weapon or any individual divine power. He was defeated by something that had no equivalent in his entire repertoire.
She was completely herself.
That was the whole of her weapon. Every form she wore across nine nights, the rootedness and the devotion and the courage and the creativity and the fierce tenderness and the undivided fire and the willingness to meet the dark and the restored luminance and the final wholeness, all of it was simply the complete expression of what she actually was. And what is completely itself leaves no room for what is only pretending.
Mahishasura ran out of new forms because her completeness left him no gap to occupy. Falsehood requires a gap. It requires the space left by something that is not quite inhabiting itself fully. The ego's capacity to keep reinventing itself as something you are not depends on you being partly absent from what you are. The moment you are fully present in your own truth, the disguises have nowhere to land.
This is Vijaya. Not the triumph of strength over strength. The triumph of complete presence over infinite disguise.
Vijaya, to conquer. But what the Devi Mahatmya actually describes is closer to the other meaning that lives inside that root, to prevail not by overpowering but by being so entirely oneself that what is not real simply has no foothold.
Nine nights prepared you for this moment.
Shailputri gave you the ground that does not move when everything else does. Brahmacharini gave you the devotion that returns every morning regardless of what the previous day cost. Chandraghanta gave you the courage to make the sound of your actual life. Kushmanda gave you the warmth at your centre that creates from joy rather than waiting for permission. Skandamata gave you the love that holds without withholding and produces warriors from that unconditional completeness. Katyayani gave you the fire of becoming undivided, of bringing every part of yourself to the single point that matters. Kalaratri took what was ready to go, every skull in her garland a liberation that made room for what comes next. Mahagauri poured the river over you and revealed the luminance that the journey had been building all along. Siddhidatri showed you what was whole from the beginning.
And now here you are. On the tenth morning. With everything you forgot that you had, remembered.
The demon has nowhere left to live.
This is not a small thing. This is the whole thing. The entire purpose of the nine nights was this morning. The purpose of the ten thousand ways the world tried to convince you that you were insufficient was to give you the specific opportunity to discover, from the inside, that you are not. The purpose of every form she wore was to show you, in nine different mirrors, the same face looking back.
Yours.
सर्वमङ्गलमाङ्गल्ये शिवे सर्वार्थसाधिके।
शरण्ये त्र्यम्बके गौरि नारायणि नमोऽस्तु ते॥
Sarva mangala maangalye shive sarvaartha sadhike,
Sharanye tryambake gauri naaraayani namosstu te.
O Narayani, the auspiciousness in all that is auspicious, who is Shiva, who accomplishes all purposes, who is the refuge, the three-eyed Gauri, to you I bow.
This is the oldest verse of recognition in the Devi Mahatmya. It does not ask for anything. It does not petition or bargain or request. It simply sees. It bows not before something entirely outside the self but before the truth that the inside and the outside were never separate to begin with.
Go now. Not as someone who has completed a festival. As someone who has been remembered to themselves. Take the ground with you. Take the devotion and the courage and the warmth and the fierce tenderness and the undivided fire and the released dark and the restored light and the wholeness that was never actually absent.
She was not nine goddesses.
She was nine truths. And every single one of them was you.
Jai Maa Durga. Jai Maa Shakti. Jai every face she wore across nine nights to find her way back to you.
॥ PRAYER ॥
Maa Durga, Adi Parashakti, the one who is all nine and the silence between them and the truth before all of them.
We do not come to you this morning with petition. We have done enough asking. Tonight we come with something rarer and harder to arrive at: recognition.
You wore nine faces across nine nights. In each one we found something we had lost, or more precisely, something we had forgotten we were carrying. The ground that does not move. The devotion that returns. The courage to ring. The warmth that creates. The love that does not withhold. The fire of being undivided. The release of what was ready to go. The luminance that the journey built without our knowing it. The wholeness that was present at the beginning and is present now and was present through every single thing in between.
We offer you tonight not our need but our gratitude. Not our asking but our arriving.
Take what we brought to these nine nights: the prayers said with full hearts, the moments of recognition, the tears that were more honest than any words, the silences that meant more than the things we said. Take all of it as the only offering that was ever worthy of you, which is simply, a heart that tried. A person who showed up. A soul that was willing to look.
And leave with us what you always leave. The knowing that we are not separate from the source. That wherever we go from here we carry you. That the seeking was never evidence of lack. It was evidence of love looking for itself in every mirror until it finally recognised its own face.
We are yours, Maa. We always were.
Jai Mata Di.
