I bet you didn’t know that when you blow out candles on your cake, you’re following a tradition that the ancient Greeks followed when they worshipped the goddess Artemis! The tradition of offering honey cakes decorated with candles goes back thousands of years. This fragment of the Apulian stemless cup is from 350-325 CE but it’s likely that the tradition goes back far longer too!

This cake, made with honey instead of sugar and wheat flour instead of maida, was made by the comedienne-actor-baker Syama Harini at let's bake up ! This is not an ad, not a collaboration. I’m just lucky to be friends with multitalented people who love food and cooking and baking as much as myself. Happy birthday to me!
