"Hello everyone I would like to share my experience about two Trimukhi mridangams(Infact mine is Panchamukhi and Trimukhi) I got done in last one year. I got it made by a versatile mridangam artist and also a unique thinker about the instrument itself Vidwan Akshay Ram R . It was built manually by Mr Thanjai Appu Mridangam & his team. Kudos to the entire unit.
I have been travelling internationally since 1998 I.e since 26 years and my line of work during my tours has been playing with lot of various kind of genres and styles of music. The constant challenge that I have faced in these kind of musical outings is the challenge of sticking to one tonic note or one Shruthi for one whole tour all the time. Infact lot of productions had to adapt to the pitch that I could bring on tour. This was mainly due to two reasons, one for the weight restrictions that we all face when we fly domestically or internationally. Second, it is too much to carry more than one mridangam, one check in baggage and one carry on. Which would easily come up to more than 35-40 kilos.
Trimukhi mridangam is a game changer when we look into these aspects. First of all even if I carry 3 right heads the whole weight will be around 20 kilos and easily it can fit in one suitcase which makes the life of a mridangam artiste traveller extremely easy. Also the tonal quality is uncompromised which makes it even better as tonal quality comes first. Also the changing of heads is extremely easy and it takes less than 30 seconds for me to do so. So when there are different pitches every song before the announcement is done I would have changed the right head of mridangam and it is ready. Also the left stays same throughout the concert and it is superb as we don’t get different tonal qualities for the amplification which makes the sound engineer’s life music easier.
