Can ancient Indian wisdom help students understand modern geopolitics?

At Mahatma Schools, Madurai, our flagship program Sārathi continues through a series of experiential Immersion Labs.

In our recent session, students explored Ṣāḍguṇya, a framework of six approaches to foreign policy and statecraft discussed in Kauṭilya’s Arthaśāstra.

But the learning did not stop with understanding the framework.

Students applied these principles to contemporary geopolitical developments, from conflicts involving the US and Gulf countries to US trade tariffs and changing international relationships.

Through discussions, analysis and reflection, students explored how nations make strategic decisions, build alliances, manage conflicts and protect their interests.

This is what we seek to do through Sārathi, where we bring Indian knowledge frameworks into dialogue with the world students live in, helping them think critically and make sense of complex issues.

Experiencing Indian Knowledge Systems before bringing them into the classroom!

We recently conducted an introductory teacher enrichment session on Indian Knowledge Systems (IKS) for the educators of DainTree Public School Tirupur.

The session was an opportunity for teachers to engage with the Indic worldview, explore some of its foundational principles, and reflect on how these perspectives can shape the way we approach education.

At Vyūha, we believe that for teachers to bring IKS meaningfully into their classrooms, they must first have an opportunity to experience, question, and reflect on these ideas themselves.

Here is a glimpse of one such moment from the session, as we explored a few of these principles together.

This is just the beginning of our engagement with Daintree Public School.

In the coming months, we will work closely with the school's educators to deepen their understanding of IKS, strengthen their capacity to apply Indic pedagogies, and meaningfully integrate relevant knowledge and practices into their everyday teaching for primary-grade learners.

Our endeavour is to make IKS not merely an addition to what children learn, but a perspective that enriches how they learn, experience, and understand the world.*

What does bullying feel like? And what does it take to stand up against it?

At our recent IKS Immersion Lab at Vivekalaya's Prakriya International School International School, Coimbatore, students explored the emotional impact of bullying and reflected on moments when they stood up for themselves or someone they cared about.

The story of Bhīma and Bakāsura from the Mahābhārata offered a powerful context for this conversation.

Both were immensely strong and had enormous appetites. Yet, while Bakāsura used his strength to intimidate and exploit, Bhīma used his to protect others.

The difference was not in their strength, but in how they chose to use it.

Through stories, conversations and personal reflections, students discovered what courage, empathy and standing up against bullying could mean in their own lives.

And that is precisely what our Immersion Labs at Vyūha Learning Labs are designed to do — immerse students in meaningful experiences, encourage reflection and help them apply their learning to everyday life.

What if education could prepare our children for the world ahead, while helping them remain deeply connected to where they come from?

That question has shaped much of our journey at Vyūha Learning Labs.

We work to bring Indian Knowledge Systems (IKS) into contemporary education through curriculum, teacher training, experiential learning and meaningful engagements with schools and students.

Not by simply looking back at the past, but by asking:

What can the knowledge traditions of India offer the learner of today?

From classrooms and teacher workshops to curriculum design and IKS immersion experiences, we have been exploring what it means to make Bhāratīya knowledge come alive for a new generation.

A room full of teachers. Many questions. Some reservations. And, through the day, many moments of recognition.

Vyūha Learning Labs recently facilitated an Indian Knowledge Systems teacher training programme for nearly 50 PRT, TGT and PGT teachers from SCERT Delhi, hosted by Central Sanskrit University, Thrissur. The sessions were led by Namrata and Priya from Vyūha.

We began with the principles of Indian education through Paramparā Śikṣā, before moving into an exploration of pedagogical tools from IKS and how they can enrich the teaching of contemporary subjects.

What made the conversations particularly meaningful were the questions and concerns that emerged from the teachers themselves: How does this translate into my classroom? Is this practical within the realities of schooling today? Where do I begin?

And perhaps the reassurance was this: much of this is not as alien as it may initially seem. Elements of these ways of learning, relating and teaching continue to live within our practices and cultural memory. The opportunity is to recognise them, understand them more deeply, and become more intentional about how we bring them into our classrooms.

In that sense, this training was not about going back in time.

It was about discovering the past that is already living within us and learning how to channel it in service of the present, as we build our collective future.

🦚✨ A little Krishna at our doorstep.

On Janmashtami, we draw little footprints to welcome Krishna into our homes a simple tradition filled with so much warmth and meaning. 💙
This Krishna Padam kolam is a beautiful reminder of how kolam can be more than lines and patterns. It can carry stories, memories, devotion and tradition all beginning with something as simple as a few dots.

And that is the journey we are excited to share through our upcoming Kolam Workshop with Vyūha to explore the art between the dots, one line at a time.

This Janmāṣṭamī, perhaps we can go beyond remembering Kṛṣṇa’s birth and rediscover the stories that made him so beloved.

Why is Kṛṣṇa called Dāmodara?
Why did Yaśodā tie little Kṛṣṇa to a mortar?
And how did a moment of mischief become a beautiful story of love, devotion and the bond between a mother and her child?

These are the stories children remember, especially when they are heard slowly, lovingly, at bedtime.
