Zia Mohiuddin Dagar
Arguably one of the most distinctive and distinguished musicians of this country in recent centuries, Zia Mohiuddin Dagar was an exponent of the Rudra Veena, India's most predominant ancient stick-zither. Closely associated with the Dhrupad form of Classical Music since time immemorial, Z M Dagar played a pivotal role in bringing forth the performance capabilities and unique m
usico-aesthetic characteristics of the instrument onto the performance platform, and enabled its intricacies and nuances to illuminate the musical thought of the entire lineage. He, along with his brother late Ustad Zia Fariduddin Dagar, was the most prominent Dhrupad Guru in modern history, and having trained hundreds of devoted students from around the world, ensured the continuity and propagation of an age-old tradition. This day is an important day for not just the Dhrupad community, but the music community as a whole, given the close links and exchange between Dhrupad and all other coexisting classical music traditions of this country. The Concept
In honor of late Ustad's memory, on the auspicious occasion of his birth anniversary, we are celebrating the International Day of Dhrupad on 14th March. The event will be run through Social Media, and will feature offerings from musicians of multiple forms and stature in the form of audio-video clippings of performative pieces, writings, talks sharing thoughts/ memories, visual art and any other form that one may choose to express themself in. All offerings will be rooted to the Dhrupad form, either as the bandish chosen being a Dhrupad-Dhamar, or through the words reflecting one's thought's/ perspective on any aspect or philosophy of Dhrupad. It is an occasion for the whole world to remember a great master, experience a part of his legacy and refresh themselves in the beauty of a magnificent and pristine form of music through the various exchanges on the International Day of Dhrupad page. We wish you have a great experience engaging with the memory of Ustad and the Dhrupad form.
