Hey, Open Sky Fam!

Due to the Ayodhya verdict and Section 144 being imposed by the government, we are cancelling today's "Art For Change" event.

Though it is a private event that was supposed to take place indoors, we place the safety and security of our community members at a priority. We know that many of our performers and audience members travel a considerable distance to get to our events and we do not want to compromise on anyone's safety.

Please stay safe today. There are many more Slams to go!

PS: Keep an eye on our social media for upcoming events.

Cheers!

I would love it if we were in an ideal world where spoken word is something you can make a job. The first time I was introduced to spoken word, I found a part of myself on stage. It was also the day I came to my first Open Sky Slam. Just like that, I was in love. I remember I was reading from a phone. I never looked up and I shook so much! (oh god) But just getting it out of my system was one of the biggest highs I’ve ever had. That’s the best part about performing in front of supportive people. I started hearing snaps and looked into the crowd. Since then, poetry has stuck with me.

I don’t exactly have a writing process. I think every piece in itself is unique for me in terms of the experience I had writing it. For my piece titled, ‘Netflix and Chill’, I had to go through counselling. To go that deep into what I was writing, I sought help from a teacher who’s a therapist and she made me pen down everything. It was a mental struggle but it turned out to be one of my favourite pieces.

Also, when I write, it’s so hard to knock out a line that doesn’t fit. I have two-three friends who help me in the writing process. They tell me to get a line out and I never wanna. It’s like my child. But once the line’s out, the poem’s together. I have a separate folder where I keep such lines. Until I find a poem where I can use them, they just float there. Some lines sit there lonely for years.

I have a lot of respect for writers who write about happiness. You see, sunshine isn't as powerful as rain clouds for some reason. You think of everything when there’s a cloud but a sun is just like, ‘Oh damn, the sun.’ Weirdly, sorrow is something that connects all of us and happiness isn’t.

Nobody’s expecting you to fail. So when you go on stage, don’t think that everyone is waiting for you to fall on your face. People from the community will always encourage you. It happened to me when I fumbled! I’ve seen people hug performers mid-performance on stage and that is truly beautiful.

Can you think back on the days when you just sit with your friends and chill? No worries, no stress, just you and your friends together, chatting and relaxing. It’s where you are most comfortable, most yourself, and probably the most accepted. The story of Open Sky Slam starts with one such day. With friends, a terrace, and the spirit of performing.

4 and a half years ago, a group of friends got together on a terrace and decided to perform for each other. It was an odd, mixed group of poets and musicians, a dancer, a stand-up comedian, and even a magician! That day went so well, everyone felt like it should happen again. And it did! The next month, it happened on another friend's terrace. Then another. And another. At that point, there weren't too many places artists where could just go perform, and that group of friends discovered a platform right there amongst each other. And today, we are known as Open Sky Slam, a place that has managed to keep that sentiment alive and kicking.

Soon after we started on those terrace sessions, a cafe offered us a place to perform with mics and speakers - an actual performance stage. These cafe sessions of ours happened again and again, growing with each performance. Pretty soon, restaurants and cafes heard about our gigs and called us to their places to perform too!

That's not all! Some of the initial performers who had come to Bangalore just for a while went back to their cities. And just like that, OSS spread to other parts of the country. Pretty soon, we had established ourselves in Bangalore, Mumbai, Calicut, Pune, Hyderabad and Chennai. There was no competition, no judgement. Just a bunch of people and their love of performing. We started out with just some artists wanting to perform for each other and today we’ve become a growing community.

Now, OSS just looks forward to growth. New performers, new places, new pieces. We just want our community to grow, holding onto its roots of performing only for the love of performing. We want to give budding artists platforms in places they aren't available. We want to get more artists involved in cities we are already well established in. Our goal is to continue providing a safe space for artists to perform freely.

What makes OSS special is the fact that it was never planned. We never started out thinking it would ever be this big. Everything happened organically. OSS built itself. It made itself bigger and bigger, with plenty of people helping along the way. It’s fresh and constantly brimming with energy, always ready to grow!

Open Sky Slam was a name we came up with that literally described what we had started off doing - performing under the open sky. Since then, our name has come to mean much more. It grew like our organization, becoming more inclusive and larger - a symbolic representation of our openness for artists to do what they love limitlessly under our open skies!

When I was young, I was shy, unconfident and believed I would stay average my entire life. After 23 years, I told myself I wanted to be someone in this lifetime. I started loving myself. I decided to go out of my comfort zone and be shameless. To get to your goal, it’s important to be spontaneous. Start off crudely, randomly. Don’t restrict yourself and choose your path too early. Most importantly, don’t be scared to mess up. Experiment with random, crazy stuff. At one point, you will become numb to any doubt or fear. Always remember, there’s nothing people can say beyond the point of, “you can’t do it”. If you want it, make it happen. - Narpat
