➡️ A Dialogue Beyond the Blueprints

Can we relearn placemaking?

This workshop asks how questions of agency, care, resilience, and regional context can be brought into architectural education and practice. Participants envision the creation of a manifesto for feminist spatial pedagogies, as a co-created framework that can critically transform how space and place-making are taught and practised, both regionally and globally.

Free and open to all. RSVP on the BIC website.

➡️ Women Shaping Architecture in India

This panel brings together diverse practitioners to reflect on their professional journeys and the evolving roles as women in architecture. Extending the central idea of the exhibition, the discussion intends to challenge the conventional perceptions about architectural practice in India by examining how women, educators, workers, conservationists, and other overlooked groups shape the built environment.

PATIO Conversations: Exhibiting Architecture in South Asia
As part of the ongoing PATIO Conversations series on Architecture and Media Cultures, this session turns to the exhibition space as a critical site for architectural discourse in South Asia. Unlike contexts with robust institutional archives, exhibiting architecture here often means working against limited formal documentation—pushing practitioners to engage vernacular records, oral histories, personal papers, and other unconventional forms of research as primary source material. This also raises pressing questions of agency, where the standard exhibition model, centred on the architect as sole protagonist and framing architecture as an end product, sits uneasily within a region shaped by collective, informal, and often uncredited modes of building practices. Bringing together practitioners working across curation, archiving, and institution-building, the conversation examines how museums, archives, and independent initiatives are rethinking whose stories get told, and how, when the source material—and the very idea of authorship—resists conventional framing.

This special session will be held in-person at the Bangalore International Centre (BIC), India, as a part of our exhibition. If you’re in Bengaluru, we encourage you to join us in person with family and friends.

➡️ Her Labour

Women make up more than half of the construction workforce in India, and usually earn half as much. This roundtable public workshop asks how we can contribute to building awareness and solidarity with women construction workers, across the barriers of gender and class that may separate us. What connects us to the women toiling in construction?

Free and open to all. RSVP on the BIC website.

➡️ Gender in the Built Environment

This inaugural discussion launches the Bangalore edition of the exhibition, “Expanding Agency and Archival Silences”. Panellists will foreground questions of gender and agency within spatial design practices in India and lay the foundation for the upcoming walkthroughs, discussions, and workshops. Agency is negotiated, marked, and expanded in multiple ways.

➡️ Expanding Agency and Archival Silences

The travelling exhibition, Expanding Agency: Women, Race and the Dissemination of Modern Architecture, offers a critical path towards reconsidering who is recognised in the making of architecture. By foregrounding women and racialised communities, the travelling exhibition, curated by architectural historian Kathleen James Chakraborty at the University of Dublin, reveals how architecture is also shaped through education, journalism, advocacy, patronage, networks, communication and other forms of professional and public engagement.

Bringing this enquiry into the Indian context, Expanding Agency and Archival Silences: Gender in the Built Environment, invites us to ask whose contributions are recognised, recorded, ignored, and what forms of practice remain outside conventional architectural histories.

Free and open to all. RSVP on the BIC website.

Who said gender representation and archival research has to be devoid of arts, creativity and fun?

Artist Mantu Das will bring his explorations with interactive storytelling from the classroom to seminar hall at Bangalore International Centre on Sunday afternoon, where the participants are invited to remember how architecture or spatial experience has stayed with them: a childhood home, a school, a grandparent's house, a railway station, a temple, a street corner — any place tied to a meaningful memory. These personal memories will be translated hands-on, into layered drawings and spatial compositions using paint, light, and transparent surfaces.

Visual artist and assistant professor at VIT School of Media Arts and Technology (V-SMART), VIT Vellore, Mantu graduate of Kala Bhavana, Santiniketan, his work has been shown at ZARYA Center for Contemporary Art (Vladivostok), the Royal Hibernian Academy (Dublin), the BLIK BLIK Light Festival (Czech Republic), the India Art Fair, and more, and is held in public collections including the Museum of Art & Photography, Bangalore.

The launch event on Friday evening will set the context for foregrounding the agency of gender in spatial design practices of India by bringing the collective, the curators, into conversation with an architectural educator and a social scientist. Taking things forward on Saturday morning, at the roundtable discussion, an architect, historian, and social worker reflect on their engagements with women construction workers.

After a little pause, we will reconvene to expand the idea of agency through critical conversations, "On Exhibiting Architecture" with practitioners who occupy, present, and interpret spaces simultaneously, on an almost everyday basis. Then back to the stories: on Sunday morning, a range of women practitioners will take us through their journey and reflect on what their leadership has meant so far.

Sunday afternoon will be a perfect segue into getting your 'hands dirty'! Join artist Mantu Das in reinterpreting the exhibition, its conversations, and stories of women practitioners into interactive art for storytelling... before we culminate as a group to rethink pedagogies.

All of these conversations and activities should transform how we learn or teach about architecture and its allied disciplines. To make space for care, compassion, responsive, and nuanced understanding of inhabitable spaces for co-existence, we will be in conversation with practitioners from across borders, with the intention of developing a manifesto for feminist spaces and places!

Everyone is invited!

Expanding Agency and Archival Silences: Gender in the Built Environment is an interpretive extension of the international exhibition Expanding Agency: Women, Race And The Dissemination of Modern Architecture, which will be presented at the Bangalore International Centre, Domlur, from 4th to 8th September 2026. This curatorial initiative is brought to you by Curating for Culture in collaboration with VIT School of Architecture Vsparc Makes , PATIO Network, OMHI - Omitted from History project, and the Women of Vaastukala Archive.

The travelling exhibition ‘Expanding Agency’ reveals the role that women and members of ethnic minorities, primarily African Americans, played in transmitting modern architecture and design globally between 1920 and 1970. Curated by architectural historian Kathleen James Chakraborty at the University of Dublin, the exhibition highlights the multiple channels through which women and African Americans shaped the built environment, including journalism, entrepreneurship, philanthropy, and patronage. The exhibition seeks to foreground the multiple ways in which women in all their intersectional identities have shaped architecture beyond its conventional sense and practice.

In response, the Bangalore edition aims to extend the conversation into the regional context by engaging with conversations around agency and archival histories, and critically looking at caste, class, gender, labour, migration, religion, and the politics of everyday life encountered and perhaps overlooked within the spatial discourse in India.

The exhibition will be accompanied by a series of open public events over the weekend. More details to follow soon.
