On November 24, 2009, John Edward Jones tragically became trapped and lost his life in the Nutty Putty cave after being stuck inside for 28 harrowing hours.

During an exploration with his brother Josh, Jones mistakenly entered a narrow tunnel, thinking it was the familiar "Birth Canal" passageway. He became wedged upside-down in a space measuring 10 by 18 inches (25 by 46 cm), approximately 400 feet (120 m) from the cave's entrance. In this position, his body formed a hook-like shape, making it impossible for him to move without risking serious injury.

Despite the efforts of a large rescue team, Jones couldn't be extricated using a sophisticated rope-and-pulley system due to a pulley failure mid-rescue attempt. Over time, the strain on his body, caused by his inverted and compressed position, led to cardiac arrest.

Rescuers deemed it too perilous to recover his body. Consequently, an agreement was reached between the landowner and Jones' family to permanently seal the cave as a memorial to him. Explosives were employed to collapse the ceiling near Jones' body, and the entrance hole was filled with concrete to prevent further access.
