Emily Dickinson (b. 1830 - d. 1886) is perhaps the best known American poet, known for her lyrical style, mostly short poetry, unique punctuation, and evocative emotion. Having written nearly 1800 poems during her lifetime, she published only a few - usually edited to remove her distinct style and punctuation - before she died. She is known for becoming quite reclusive by her later years, and the true extent of her writing wasn't discovered until after she passed. What's your favorite Emily Dickinson poem?

The cultural conversation this week surrounds Christopher Nolan's adaptation of Odyssey. There have been numerous translations of Homer's works into English, with the recent translations by Emily Wilson receiving much press for their modernization. Of course, direct translations of these classical works are not the only way they've made their way into English literature, with many books being directly inspired by the works of Homer, such as Ulysses by James Joyce and Madeline Miller's critically acclaimed novels, The Song of Achilles and Circe, among others. Have you read any books inspired by Homer recently, or even Homer himself?

Diana Wynne Jones (1934-2011) was a prolific children's fantasy author, perhaps best known for her book Howl's Moving Castle, famously adapted into a movie by Miyazaki in 2004. She wrote over 40 books in her lifetime, which have been translated into over 30 languages, including Hebrew. Despite never achieving the notoriety of some other writers, she was what you might call an author's author. Maggie Stiefvater called her her literary hero, and Ursula K Le Guin wrote that she "invents brilliant rules for her brilliant invented rules full of realistic impossible marvels". Have you ever read any of Diana Wynne Jones' books?
