Women’s Energy Cycle

Birchwood wheel with stand

This wheel is a calendar for your inner world. The menstrual cycle is one of the most fascinating natural cycles, one of the most obvious and yet often overlooked or ignored.

Menstruating women go through an inner cycle of seasons roughly every month: you can think of these as your ‘inner winter’ (menstruation) ‘inner spring’ (follicular phase), ‘inner summer’ (ovulation phase) and ‘inner autumn’ (luteal phase). Each season brings about intricate changes in our bodies hormonal and emotional balance and this can can look different for everyone. But there are certain commonalities: A fresh energy in the spring perhaps, a peak in summer, a winding down in autumn and sense of going inward in the winter.

Some women find it helpful to follow the seasons of their cycle and allow appropriate time and space for their energy to expand and contract accordingly. For example if you feel wonderful around ovulation or during your ‘inner summer’, plan in social occasions then or schedule important meetings when some extra confidence will be helpful. In contrast, some women find it helpful to clear space in their calendars around menstruation to allow down time or just time to reflect and go inward a bit.

This circle is designed to be turned by hand with the menstrual cycle to help you and those around you stay in tune with your inner seasons.

Womb yoga teacher and friend advised me closely on this circle. And interestingly that collaboration initiated my whole fascination with natural cycles. Essentially was born from this circle.

Today, 16th October the new moon is 2 days old. In its waxing crescent phase.

This is a lovely time to sit with your hopes and feelings and maybe to set intentions for the cycle ahead. As the moon ‘grows’ over the coming weeks so may your intentions begin to manifest in habit. As habits form and our minds keep visioning what we want to bring into our lives, we move closer to those aspirations and our intentions can become our reality.

Pictured here is the Moon Phases lined notebook, a perfect place to journal or set in writing practices like these.

Our notebooks are made from 95% post consumer waste. The lovely, very slightly flecked paper takes ink pen beautifully and is thick enough to not allow any bleed to the other side. They are made for us by our good friend in Cork.

❤️Wild Rosehip

These jewels have long been used in folk and traditional medicine for their anti inflammatory effects. They are ridiculously high in vitamin C and a wealth of other compounds. This is Hedgerow medicine. So easy to find and process. I picked these today with my little boy. He’s been loving an elderberry oxymel we made last month and I’m delighted to be able to fortify him with this too.

This is how to make a batch of Wild Rose hip syrup

Sterilise a couple of bottles and vinegar-proof screw-tops or stoppers by washing thoroughly in hot soapy water, rinsing well, then putting them on a tray in a low oven (at 120°C/Gas 1⁄2) to dry out and heat up.

Roughly chop the rosehips in a food processor in batches, then transfer to a large saucepan and add 1.25 litres water.

Bring to the boil, then turn the heat down and simmer for around 15 minutes.

Strain through a double layer of muslin, letting the pulp sit for a good half hour so that all the juice passes through.

Wash out the muslin, or cut a fresh piece, fold to double it and pass the strained juice through it again.

Measure the rosehip juice into a large saucepan.

For every 500ml, add 325g sugar.

Heat slowly, stirring, until the sugar has dissolved, then bring to the boil and boil for 3 minutes, skimming off any scum if necessary.

Decant immediately into the prepared bottles and seal.

Label when the bottles have cooled completely.

Use within 4 months and refrigerate once opened.

Autumn Equinox returns

Waving hello to you all after a lengthly absence. Life got very life-y there for a while and I just didn’t have any extra Emily to share. I’m getting back to creating again after a summer of adventure and fatigue! Between building a new website, camping, potty training, avoiding rain, making most of sun, and generally grappling with the fun and force that is a 2 .5 year old boy... it’s been a trip!

Sometimes I get to this point in the year and I don’t feel ready for the shift, the fall the slow down. But this time I’m almost a step ahead; expecting the leaves to be turning already as my energy finds it’s equilibrium again. Equal day and equal night sounds very good to me!

I hope you had a good summer and feel ready for the season ahead.

Veg Patch - what to plant and when to plant it

This beaut’ is finally back in stock! Apologies for the delay those who have been waiting patiently.

If you haven’t done much in the garden yet this is a great time to jump in and get started. June is wonderful because you can plant seed directly in the soil outdoors. You can sow black kale, cauliflower, broccoli, beet, carrot and beans. And all relatively easily without the hassle of planting indoors in pots and transplanting out. This is because the weather is warm enough now and chance of frost is gone.

May

Coming into season now are Strawberries, Broad Beans, French Beans and Cucumber.

Best in season this month is Rhubarb. You will find people that have it growing will be giving it away. And this tangy, tropical flavor lends itself so well to baking and preserving.

This print is a handy reference for any kitchen or eatery. A great way to keep in mind what’s in season. Save money, save energy, save time and do less harm to the environment. 💚
