I am so excited about our our term starting next week with a focus on drawing- my favourite practice!!

As a teenager, I did not have the best concentration and school was sometimes quite tricky when I had to sit and focus. My leg would jig under the table and I would draw..until I was found sketching, not in art class, and paper taken away. So my arms and hands and knees were full of sketches and doodles. Something about it calmed my mind and actually helped me absorb more in the background.

We will be practicing line drawing as an etch and a sketch and a fantastic source for this time of year is the wonderful sunflower 🌻

Happy August!!! It is by far my favourite time of year ❀️ It always feels like there is something magic in the air and it definitely inspires the artist in me. I thought I would share a little bit about me and my background 😊

My name is Anna and I live in beautiful West Wicklow with my husband Peadar and three children (one who is now a teenager, yikes!!). When I was a child I was given the best gift ever by my parents- freedom. I feel both privileged and grateful for the freedom and opportunities I was given as a child. My parents knew I was a creative soul and supported me after school to pursue the arts. I completed a National Vocational Diploma in Art and Design and then headed to London to become an Architect ( I thought it was the most practical route to a job)...but I didn't enjoy the computer design aspect and transfered to a Fine Art degree in my second year.

And then I had a eureka moment- I wanted to see more of the world outside of cities. So, at 20, I left my degree programme, took on a full time job and saved to go live and volunteer in the rural hills of Nepal for 9 months. Yes, my parents nearly had a heart attack but they knew I had a very impulsive and persuasive streak. And if I could support myself, they were happy. After this amazing experience, I headed to UCD to finish my Arts Degree. I then started working in an international development agency called GOAL and started a part time Masters in International Development (my experience in Nepal really shaped me). I was then offered a job with UNICEF Nepal to help develop their school water and sanitation programme and helped shape their child and gender friendly policies in schools. We stayed there for four years and it was probably one of the most creative jobs ever! Mostly because I had an amazing team and boss that trusted me to use my creative brain to solve problems...

Fast forward 3 babies later, a degree in Early Years Studies and a passion for child development and the arts! Basecamp was born 6 years ago (my fourth child??πŸ˜„) and I love teaching new skills and also allowing the child to find their own unique response to the creative project- and problem solve along the way!

One of the most satisfying art activities...making your own scratch art! All you need are good quality oil pastels to lay to colour in the background, poster black paint to paint a thin layer of paint on top. Let it dry and then scratch away with sticks/backs of paint brushes ☺️
