Abandoned Church - Purdysburn, Belfast.

In an era before modern approaches to mental health care, religion played a significant role in daily life. Services, prayers, and religious observances were often woven into the weekly routine for both patients and staff. For many, the church offered a sense of familiarity, comfort, and connection during difficult periods of their lives.

Behind these walls are stories that should never be forgotten.

I never celebrate the abandonment of any building.

These photographs, taken across a number of Ireland's abandoned asylums, capture buildings that witnessed some of the darkest chapters in our social history. Behind the grand facades were countless individuals who, in many cases, endured isolation, harsh treatment, and conditions that would be unthinkable today.

While these structures now stand empty, they serve as powerful reminders of the people who passed through their doors and the lessons that history has taught us. Their stories deserve to be remembered, not hidden away.

This collection is not about the decay of the buildings themselves, but about preserving the memory of those whose voices were often never heard.

Omagh Gaol house rocked this weekend!!

Here’s today’s two tours, I really really enjoyed this weekend and showing you the incredible work Rodney is doing with the Gov’s gaff!!

We will plan another open day in September with a potential auction to help the restoration project 👏
