For eight weeks over the summer, I had the pleasure of facilitating a fabulous sustainable sewing workshop in Abbey Hall, Graiguenamanagh.
The aim was to instil confidence in participants and show them that they, too, can make, do, reuse and repurpose materials. We explored sourcing materials from charity shops and, just as importantly, looking at what we already have in our own homes and wardrobes.
It’s all about rethinking what you have in front of you. With a little imagination, some creative design and a few simple hand-sewing techniques, you can transform something old into something new and useful. You don’t always need a sewing machine — although it’s great if you have one! And it doesn't need to be perfect, handmade should look handmade.
I think we achieved what we set out to do, and more. We learned from each other. It was wonderful to see the creativity, confidence and enthusiasm grow throughout the eight weeks.
