Sometimes with a big idea. Sometimes with something much smaller: a memory, a strange conversation, a local story, a piece of folklore, or simply something you feel strongly about.

For ๐‡๐จ๐ฆ๐ž๐ ๐ซ๐จ๐ฐ๐ง ๐Ÿ๐ŸŽ๐Ÿ๐Ÿ•, there is no set theme. We want to hear the stories you want to tell.

And you donโ€™t need previous playwriting experience, first-time writers are very welcome.

Before there was Homegrown, there was Page to Stage - local writers putting their ideas on paper, actors bringing those words to life, and a community coming together around new theatre.

As we get ready for ๐ž๐ฌ๐ญ๐ข๐ฏ๐š๐ฅ ๐Ÿ๐ŸŽ๐Ÿ๐Ÿ•, we wanted to look back at some of the people and moments that made last yearโ€™s festival happen.

Every performance starts somewhere: often with one idea, one conversation, or one person deciding to write something down.

Weโ€™re looking forward to doing it all again in March 2027.

A 30-minute play sits in a lovely space between a very short piece and a full-length production.

It gives a writer enough time to develop a character, explore a relationship, build tension and tell a complete story without needing the scale of a full eveningโ€™s play.

It can be intimate. Funny. Uncomfortable. Moving. Strange. Familiar.

And sometimes, one strong idea is all you need.

If you have a story that feels too big for ten minutes but doesnโ€™t need two hours, maybe 30 minutes is exactly the right space for it.

โœ๏ธ Homegrown 2027 is inviting submissions for 30-minute plays.

A short play can still do a lot.
It can introduce unforgettable characters, build tension, shift relationships, and leave the audience with something that stays with them long after the curtain falls.

In this carousel, weโ€™re sharing a few simple prompts to help you think about what can make a strong 30-minute play:
โœจ one strong central idea
โœจ a character we care about
โœจ tension that grows
โœจ change in a relationship
โœจ something memorable at the end
