✨ - Nothing Sparkles Like a Babycham 🦌

Perched elegantly in the Lounge sits a perfectly preserved little bottle of Babycham 🍐🍾 — the drink that brought a touch of sparkle in the 1970s and 80s 🕺💃

Long before prosecco 🥂, Babycham was a sign that something was being celebrated 🎉... and that pubs, they were a-changing 👜😉

Created in the UK in 1953, Babycham was a sparkling pear perry 🍐✨ that quickly became one of the most successful drinks of its era. Originally known as Champagne de la Poire 🍾, it was light, stylish and affordable ✨ — and the first alcoholic drink ever advertised on TV 📺

Its famous chamois fawn mascot 🦌 became one of the most recognisable advertising symbols of the 20th century. It appeared everywhere — on bottles, glasses, bar displays, cinema ads and TV screens 📺 — accompanied by memorable slogans"I'd Love a Babycham", "Everyone Loves Babycham" and "Nothing Sparkles Like a Babycham" ✨🍾

What's often overlooked is how much Babycham rewrote the rules of modern brand advertising 💥 and reflected a changing society 🌍. In an era where it was considered unladylike for women to enjoy alcohol 🙄, Babycham's lightweight, sparkling nature and cute branding made it respectable to drink in public🥂

Served in its own elegant saucer glass, it offered something lighter (6%) than the traditional pint 🍺 or whiskey 🥃. Babycham was part of a new era 🌟 — a small but visible sign of changing times and growing independence 💪🎀

The little green bottles were a familiar sight behind bars all over Ireland, including here in Carty's 🥂. Christmas 🎄✨ was especially associated with the drink, so much so that it was considered part of the festive season itself 🎅

The commercial blueprint of Babycham cleared the path for the massive 1990s alcopop boom 🍹🍾 (remember Ritz - and it's counterpart Stag? WKD, H***h, Smirnoff Ice and Bacardi Breezer?) and the explosion of modern fruit ciders like Kopparberg 🍓🍋‍🟩 and wine cooler, West Coast Cooler.

🍻💚 - The Pint of Heino 💚✨

When you see the glowing Heineken sign outside Carty's or relax beneath our Heineken-branded parasols ☀️, pint in hand 🍺, you're looking at more than just a beer brand — you're looking at over 150 years of brewing history 📖

The story begins in Amsterdam in 1864, when Gerard Adriaan Heineken bought a brewery called De Hooiberg ("The Haystack") 🌾. Determined to brew the finest lager 🍻, he embraced innovation 🔬and became the first brewer in the world to introduce a quality control laboratory 🧪🏆

By 1873, he put his own name on the brewery 🏭, and success soon followed. Just 2 years later, Heineken was winning gold medals 🥇, and by 1889 it had claimed the prestigious Grand Prix in Paris 🇫🇷. So respected was the beer that Heineken began supplying the restaurant in the newly built Eiffel Tower!🗼

One of the brewery's biggest breakthroughs came in 1886 with the discovery of the famous Heineken A-Yeast® 🍃, the secret behind the crisp, balanced taste 😋 that beer lovers around the world still enjoy today 🌎

Then came one of the great stories in brewing history. In 1933, as America prepared to end Prohibition 🇺🇸 after 11 long years ⏳, a ship loaded with Heineken 🚢 was already on its way to New York 🗽. The gamble paid off perfectly ✨, Heineken was the first imported beer available when celebrations erupted across the United States 🎊🍻

💚 The brand's famous green identity, smiling "e" 😊, and iconic red star ⭐ were later championed by Alfred Heineken, whose belief was simple: 💬 "I don't sell beer, I sell enjoyment." And that's a sentiment we can certainly raise a glass to at Carty's! 🍻❤️

Some things change over 150 years.... but a pint of Heineken, Heino or 00 😉 in good company never does 🍺💚 Sláinte! 🙌🍻

Today marks an incredible milestone 🙌 — 40 years of Ireland West Airport. From the very beginning, the airport and Knock village have shared a story unlike anywhere else in Ireland. 🫶 We'd love to hear your memories! 💭

Long before the first passengers arrived, locals watched the runways being carved into the Mayo landscape 🚜. Families in Knock and the surrounding areas remember the trucks 🚛, the workers 🛠, the excitement 🤗, the scepticism 😬… and the hope ☺️🥰.

Many people from the village helped build it, worked there over the years, welcomed visitors through its doors, or made lifelong careers from what started as Monsignor Horan’s ambitious dream 🙏 — a vision that brought opportunity, connection and pride to Knock, and one that generations of local families will always be grateful for 💫.

For villages like Knock, the airport changed everything. It brought the world closer to our doorstep 🌍🗺. Pilgrims, tourists, returning emigrants, holidaymakers and workers all passed through — and many found their way into Carty's Bar & Lounge - Knock for a warm welcome, a pint, a bit of craic and a story along the way. 🍻🥰

Over four decades, we’ve seen friendships formed at the counter after flights home from London, reunions before departures to America, celebrations after safe arrivals, and the odd holiday too - whether for sunshine, skiing, golfing, weddings, hens and stags... they often started or finished (or both!) in Carty’s ✈️🥳🥂🍻.

Today, Ireland West Airport remains a huge part of life here in Knock, supporting local businesses, jobs, tourism and community spirit. We’re proud to have grown alongside it and Knock Shrine ⛪️.
