The Irish Dresser and Folklore Calendar

The Irish Dresser and Folklore Calendar A stunning new calendar exploring the Irish dresser and dates of folkloric importance in Ireland.

“Dressers, their makers and owners, the objects displayed are beautifully captured by Michael Fortune. Functional and beautiful, dressers are evocative and prompt memories. Through image and interview Michael weaves and shares the story of the Irish dresser. Enjoy!”

(Rosa Meehan, Curator at the National Museum of Ireland - Country Life)

Here’s what’s under my Christmas tree tonight - a load of packed, addressed and stamped calendars all ready to be posted in the morning! I was kept busy processing these today as we got a load of orders in yesterday and today. As always, if you want a copy of The Irish Dresser and Folklore Calendar - now is a right time to order as the postal service is great at present and there’s still free postage in Ireland. Orders to the US/Canada are way up this year too and only taking about 6 days to get from door to door.

You can order copies directly from me at:

www.thedresserproject.ie or www.folklore.ie

Thanks a million.

West Cork Furniture

Here are some lovely examples of vernacular furniture from outside Schull in West Cork. These photos were sent to me by Eva O’Callaghan as part of my work on The Dresser Project in Cork during the year. She tells me that the pieces were made her husbands grandfather around the early part of 1900s. He was a carpenter, who we believe built the house and did all woodwork inside including making all the furniture, stairs etc. Great style and detail on the dresser and I love the little shelf and forum.

This dresser features in the 2022 Irish Dresser and Folklore Calendar and you can get copies over at www.thedresserproject.ie

I left Wexford at 6.45am this morning and pointed the car in the direction of north west Offaly. Great few hours recording two people Rosemarie Lantry and Jackie Lynch regarding a series of objects that they own and collecting the stories about them. The objects ranged from old pieces of prison art to Christening shawls and from 1960s old toys to farm diaries from the 1840s. Browse away at the snaps and I’ll share the stories in detail in time. These stories are being recorded as part of a new project I’ve been commissioned work on in Offaly called Spectacular Vernacular.

What about this for a dresser and a collection!!

I left Wexford yesterday morning at 7am for Offaly and spent the day in three homes in near Horseleap, Pullagh and Cloghan documenting a body of objects and their stories for a new project. This was one of the houses I called to belonging to Séamus Carroll and it has to have been one of the best ‘museums’ I have ever been in. This is his private home and his own private collection and you can’t turn sideways without seeing something and more importantly Séamus telling you about it. I never saw anything like it and he knows where everything came from and in most cases who owned it before him. This dresser is just one of the hundreds of pieces he has and the finest gentleman you could ever meet. As dressers go, this is an absolute beast. It came from Roscrea in North Tipperary and weights a ton. No cheap wood here and everything is supersized. I’ll share more photos in time of his collection but in meantime enjoy these.

Today is St. Andrew’s Day and a big day for many Scottish people however it was also marked here in Ireland in some ways. In Wexford there was a tradition of making a St. Andrew’s Cross from two rushes which was hung up on this day in cow houses and any sheds or barns with stock or fowl. You’ll find accounts recorded over the years but I’ve only came across one person who actually remembers seeing it being done. Like the St. Brigid’s Cross, it was made using rushes and hung over the door. No idea why it made its way here and wondering does anyone else mark this day at all in ways like this?

Following the huge success of last year’s publication, I have decided to produce a 2022 edition of The Irish Dresser and Folklore Calendar.

Such was the demand last year I had to do three print runs, so I’m starting sales early this year. The new calendar has more pages and features 46 dressers from Mayo, Galway, Clare, Limerick, Cork, Tipperary, Waterford, Wexford, Carlow and Wicklow. It also includes a special pull-out poster on dressers from Co. Cork and Abandoned Dressers from around the country.

It is currently with the printers and I’ll have them for shipping on Friday the 1st of October. So if you you want to pre-order now, head on over to www.thedresserproject.ie. They are €15 each and shipping costs and payment options are all set out on the website. Thanks a million for your support.
