A Mighty Girl

A Mighty Girl

Ursula Le Guin, who was praised as bringing "literary depth and a tough-minded feminist sensibility to science fiction and fantasy," was born on this day in 1929. Famous for such works as The Left Hand of Darkness, The Dispossessed, and the Earthsea series, Le Guin, who died two years ago at the age of 88, was known for tackling complex and often challenging social issues in her work and frequently exploring themes of gender, race, and identity. She believed that writing that drew readers into the "inner lands" of the imagination could be a moral force, observing that "if you cannot or will not imagine the results of your actions, there’s no way you can act morally or responsibly. Little kids can’t do it; babies are morally monsters — completely greedy. Their imagination has to be trained into foresight and empathy.”

For readers who would like to delve into Ursula Le Guin's work, we highly recommend the "Earthsea" series (, "The Dispossessed" (, "The Left Hand of Darkness (, and "The Lathe Of Heaven" (

Three volumes of her lesser-known work have also recently been released: "The Found and the Lost: The Collected Novellas of Ursula K. Le Guin" (, "The Unreal and the Real: The Selected Short Stories of Ursula K. Le Guin" (; and "The Complete Orsinia", which collects her realistic fiction (

For teen readers interested in exploring her work, in her novel "Voices", Le Guin creates a world where books are forbidden and a young woman must decide what her role will be in a rebellion fomenting against the oppressive occupiers of her city -- recommended for ages 12 and up at

❤️ We want to Publish Your Kids Book ❤️

The fastest growing Children’s Book Publisher in the USA is looking for new books to publish.

If you have an illustrated story that simply hasn’t scaled on Amazon, or that you just don’t know how to get published…

Please complete our short New Publisher Questionnaire.

Just north of San Diego, CA in a beautiful little city called Del Mar, the fastest growing children’s book publisher in the US has been disrupting the “old school” publishing industry.

The result has caused tremors among the world’s largest publishers because, simply put…

Authors are now making more money than they ever have before.

What’s the secret?

We sell over 1,000 books a day (per title) directly to customers online.

How do we do it?

Well… our parent company is one of the largest direct-response, online marketing agencies in the United States. We figured out how to sell thousands and thousands of books a day, and…

💵💰 We pay the highest royalty in the industry. How do we do we pay more? Well, it’s because we help you own the customer.

The people who buy your book are no longer Amazon, Barnes & Noble, or Target’s customers. They are yours. They bought your book. They loved it! They are now part of your tribe - your brand 😀

😍 Your book will be featured on Facebook, Instagram, Youtube, Google, Pinterest, AOL, MSN, CNN, and many more… Rather than letting Amazon, Barnes & Noble, and Target own your customer… We sell direct!

👫 This means you, the author, can actually talk to your customers! It means you can sell them more of your books. It means you build you brand and a career. One particular author created a book in 2008 which only had about 100 sales in the last 12 years.

👻 We took her Halloween book and sold 12,500 copies in the 3 weeks prior to Halloween. THEN…

we SOLD OUT of her holiday book with a record 15k copies in only 11 days.

It was incredible! She is happy to talk to you about it as well. We did all the formatting, printing, advertising, shipping and customer service. She just got a check with no upfront cost at all. Most publishing houses “Loan” you the money to publish your book which is an offset against your draw.

Well frankly… we think that model is B.S. We do all the work, and you get paid every time a book sells.

It’s that straight-forward.

No cost, just royalty checks and customers who love you and your books. We are only picking up 50 new titles for 2020, so…

Please complete our short New Publisher Questionnaire to see how much money you could be making a month!

Beautiful. Sad.

Beautiful. Sad.

Since I shared news of my terminal diagnosis, the love & generosity you have shown to our little family bookshop has blown our hearts wide open ❤️
I'm usually a private person but posted about my diagnosis to give customers an explanation for myself & Pat's absence - we didn't expect the support of thousands, we didn't expect to be overwhelmed with love 😭❤️
For 13 years, I poured my energy, myself, my heart into the shop. I wished, hoped, worried, pulled and dragged the shop into the world. When I met my husband, he had to learn to love and work in the shop too (we came as a pair😬). We lived on so little so we could keep Scéal Eile Books alive. Owning a bookshop is not an easy thing, booksellers joke that it is a calling. But oh we have had many adventures. We have sold books to museums & galleries in New York, Amsterdam, Barcelona, to collectors all over the world, and we have sold Minecraft books to kids in exchange for their life savings, clutched in a sticky hand 😅
I had no idea that through all this, you were there, falling a little bit in love with Scéal Eile Books too ❤️
Thank you for showing me that the shop we built, my little dream, is so loved by you. In a world of retail giants, thank you for seeing us ❤️
Sorry if the messages, emails & letters you sent haven't been answered, or have just had automated replies, we really want you all to know that every message has been read, every one of them has touched us, there's just no time to reply right now. To the people who have offered to work, you are so kind. At present, it feels right for the shop to be run by family. But this may change. Again, thank you for such kindness as we stumble into our new stark reality ❤️
If you would to like to support us but aren't in Ennis, consider buying a gift voucher over the phone to be posted to your home ❤️
Love & light, Éibhleann

Scéal Eile Books

Scéal Eile Books

As news spread of how the Covid-19 pandemic would affect our lives, our little bookshop was hit with more awful news. Our co-owner Éibhleann's cancer had returned and she is now terminally ill at 36. Éibhleann (that's me!) opened Scéal Eile Books in 2006 with the help of my dad, and for the last 7 years I've run the shop with my husband Pat. You might also have met our 2 year old daughter Eilbhe behind the counter! We are so sad to say that we have to leave our beautiful shop, but hope you understand why. I have another, harder path to walk down now, I wish I could stay.
My parents have decided to open the shop when they can, starting from tomorrow (Monday) when they'll be open from 12ish until 4ish. Opening hours won't be what they were, I hope you all understand why. We will update our opening hours on social media when we can. Please visit and buy a book or two if you'd like to support us.
Thank you to everyone who has bought books from us over the years, or come to an event in the shop. Thanks for being part of our little dream.
