From punishment to prevention - poverty, inequality and pathways into the Irish criminal justice system.

This report explores the links between poverty and the criminal justice system. Outlining how experiences of poverty increase peoples exposure to violence, addiction, educational inequality, s*x work, gender based violence, drug dealing etc. All of which hugely increases the likelihood of people coming into contact with the criminal justice system.
This report shows that these issues are cyclical, it helps to evidence poverty as a cause and by doing so can give us steps towards understanding and addressing these problems.

Big thanks to for their support and investment.

Among the many recommendations this report calls for a gross government response to prioritise prevention over punishment, investing in secure homes, healthcare, income supports, education and youth services to break the cycle of criminalisation.

Big thanks to for opening the launch and chairing the discussions. A huge thank you to everyone involved including .lambert.7798 for her amazing insight and for hosting the launch.

✨ Exhibition now open at The LAB Gallery, Foley Street ✨
📅 Until 30th September

Nach Cuma? Who Cares? explores the politics of care and responsibility, with a focus on class and race within working-class communities in Dublin. Developed through workshops with youth and adult groups in Rialto, Bluebell, and Ballymun, the project responds to the rise of hate-driven rhetoric and division, creating a space for honest dialogue, reflection, and community voice.

This project was created by artist Aaron Sunderland Carey as part of the MA in Art and Social Action in NCAD.

St.Patrick’s day 2025
I was honoured to have my work exhibited in Mata Irlandia - Irelands eye 2025.

I unfortunately couldn’t fly over for the launch because I had to meet a man about a job.

Very appreciative to have been invited to an Áras for a celebration of community art and its contribution to inclusion and creativity.

Roll on April.

Deco - temporary exhibition open now in NCAD Gallery.

Deco is a boy created by Boys club as part of Boys in the Making which is part of the larger What Does He Need? Project, a collaboration between Dr Fiona Whelan, Rialto Youth Project and BrokenTalkers theatre group.

The Boys club have been engaged in the process of creating Deco, his story and the art work based around Deco since 2021. Deco has grown with the boys. This change from Deco at 12 till Deco now has brought on engaging and powerful stories and work.

Temporary exhibition is open Thursday the 6th of February and Friday the 7th.

Established in 2018, Boys in the Making is a dynamic place-based programme for boys and young men, which sees groups come together over time, to co-create a boy and explore his needs and experiences as he interacts with the world around him. The programme aims to explore, communicate and learn from the lived experiences and knowledge of boys and young men as they engage in a creative exploration of masculinity and its formation.

The Boys in the Making programme forms part of a long-term project called What Does He Need? - a collaboration between artist, writer and educator Dr Fiona Whelan, Rialto Youth Project and Brokentalkers theatre company.

Boys in the Making at NCAD Gallery is supported by the Arts Council of Ireland, Dublin City Council Arts Office, Rialto Youth Project and NCAD. The conference is funded through NCAD Research Seed Funding, with additional support from Heart of Glass and Paul Hamlyn Foundation.

In the creation of this work, I ran workshops in poppintree youth project.

These workshops moved through the past, present and future. Examining how the participants were shaped by their environment and how nostalgia can affect their ability to hope for the future.

Often we become to caught in survival mode to reflect or imagine futures. These workshops were an attempt to give people the space to assess and evaluate the current state of their community.

‘Stones’ will run from September 19th to October 22nd. 🗓️
