These two rooflights in an extension had been causing the client serious hassle.

Condensation had led to mould building up in the corners, black drip marks, popped paint and a very dry, rough finish from all the heat around the rooflights.

There was no point simply painting over it, so we gave everything the proper preparation:

• Scraped away all loose and failing paint
• Stabilised the problem areas with Peel Stop
• Filled all the popped areas with Two Fussy Blokes Fussy Filla
• Sanded the filler and the full surrounds smooth using our Mirka DEROS with 120-grit paper and dust extraction
• Sealed everything with Fleetwood Bloxit
• Finished with two coats of Benjamin Moore Aura Bath & Spa

The Mirka dustless sanding system was the real job-saver here. Years ago, we would have needed to sheet off nearly the entire kitchen for a job like this. Instead, we only had to protect the area directly beneath the rooflights while achieving near-dustless sanding.

Once we finished, we pulled the sheets back and handed the kitchen straight back to the client without it being out of action for two days.

A smooth, clean finish, a far more suitable coating system for this moisture-prone area and one absolutely delighted client.

Handy one for painters trying to plan outside work around the weather.

I’ve made three ready-to-use ChatGPT prompts:

🔵 Month-long outlook — for roughly planning your diary
🟡 Seven-day forecast — for organising the coming week
🔴 Two-day forecast — for the final go/no-go decision

All you have to do is:

1️⃣ Swipe across and screen-grab the prompt you want
2️⃣ Upload the screenshot into ChatGPT
3️⃣ Tell it the location of the job

Be as specific as possible. Don’t just write “Dublin,” because the weather can be completely different from one side of Dublin to another.

For my own forecast, I use:

“Rathfarnham, Dublin, Ireland.”

I’m between D12 and Stillorgan , so Rathfarnham gives me a decent centre point. Use the town, suburb or area closest to where you’ll actually be painting for the most useful forecast.

ChatGPT will read the prompt, check the latest weather information and explain it from an exterior painter’s point of view.

The month-long forecast is only a general outlook. As the job gets closer, check the seven-day forecast and then use the two-day forecast before making your final decision.

You can also ask ChatGPT to update you automatically every week. Once it gives you the forecast, say:

“Repeat this seven-day exterior-painting weather forecast for Rathfarnham every Friday morning and notify me when it’s ready.”

If Scheduled Tasks are available on your ChatGPT account, it can then give you a fresh forecast every week.

Always check Met Éireann and the live rain radar before opening the tin—but this is a handy way of gathering everything together.

Save the post, try it yourself and share it with another painter who might find it useful.

Joking aside, when we first opened this tin, we genuinely thought it was a mis-tint! We checked with the client, though, and all was good — it was exactly the colour they had chosen.

The colour is Farrow & Ball Marmelo, colour-matched into Johnstone’s Cleanable Matt. In fairness, once it went onto the walls, it actually turned out really nice. It wouldn’t be my own cup of tea, but I can definitely see the appeal. Once we put the off-white finish on the trim today, I think the whole room could come together really well.

As always, the Johnstone’s Cleanable Matt was class to use — brilliant coverage, really easy to apply and a lovely finish.

Applied using a Two Fussy Blokes 6-inch 10mm Microfibre roller and a 2½-inch Two Fussy Aqua Glider brush.

Why fight with a window reveal when you can roll it in about a minute?

Mask the window up, load the 4-inch 15mm Semi-Smooth Plus Microfibre, and let the roller do the work. Fast, clean and a savage finish with no messing around.

Mask it. Roll it. Reveal done. Easy peasy.

We are fussy — that’s how we roll.

Cutting in with the 2.5” AquaGlide

I’ve said this before — let the brush slide along. That’s the trick.

First, cut a line about ½ an inch to an inch below the ceiling. Get the paint worked in and loaded up.

Then come back for your final cut.

Now the brush has a nice wet track to slide along smoothly, instead of trying to force the line in one go.

Less messing. More control. Clean, sharp lines.

Easy peasy.

When a carpenter makes oak stairs this good, they’re an absolute joy to finish.

We’re bringing this beautiful oak to life with satin oil, applied using the Two Fussy Blokes Mohair Hybrid, along with the 1-inch and 2.5-inch AquaGlide brushes for those clean edges and smooth, controlled application.

The grain popping, the colour warming up and every step getting that rich natural finish. This is one of those jobs where the craftsmanship underneath makes all the difference.

HALFWAY THERE… 50 DAYS DONE!

Today marks Day 50 of the challenge:
100 press-ups + 100 sit-ups for 100 days.

A Stone down already

I can’t believe we’re halfway already.

The biggest shout-out has to go to my little man Tadhg. ❤️ At just 8 years old, he’s been doing the challenge with me. He’s missed the odd day because of sleepovers and being a kid, but every time he has, he’s come back the next day and smashed out 200 to catch up. Fair play to him. I’m so proud of him.

As for me, I haven’t missed a single day. No matter how tired I was, how busy work got, or how late it was, I got them done. The biggest lesson I’ve learned is that it only takes about 10 minutes a day. We all have 10 minutes.

What’s been class is the amount of people who’ve asked me if I’ve gone back to the gym. When I tell them I’m just doing 100 press-ups and 100 sit-ups every day, a few have said, “I might actually give that a go.” Some have even started doing it with their own sons. If this challenge gets a few more people moving and spending time with their kids, then it’s already been worth it.

Now, I’ll be honest… my diet has been shocking!
The World Cup hasn’t exactly helped. Too many treats, too many pints, and next week I’m off to Italy, so that’ll be another test. But the challenge doesn’t stop. I’ll be getting them done every morning before the heat kicks in.

When I get back, I’m going to really dial in the food for the final stretch. If I’ve seen this much change while eating poorly, I’m excited to see what happens over the last 50 days when I combine the workouts with eating properly. Well maybe good diet last 30 after Italy 🤣

This challenge has reminded me that you don’t need to be perfect. You don’t need fancy equipment. You don’t need hours in the gym.

You just need to start… and keep showing up.

Here’s to the next 50 days. Let’s finish this strong.
