Exotic Bali - 1930’s Advertisement

A portrait of a Balinese dancer wearing a traditional ceremonial headdress adorned with vibrant tropical flowers, intricate gold detailing, and large ear cylinders (subeng), this work was commissioned as promotional travel artwork during the 1930s “Beautiful Indies” art era. It was created for the Java-China-Japan
Lijn (JCJL), a major early-20th-century shipping company renowned for its passenger steamships, which promoted Bali as “the Isles of Romance and Beauty.” Today, travel between the islands relies on modern ferries and flights rather than the historical steamships of the past.

In the early decades of the twentieth century, the Dutch East Indies—today’s Indonesia—emerged as a romantic destination in European travel advertising. Colorful lithographic posters, luggage labels, and brochures promoted the archipelago as an exotic paradise of volcanic landscapes, ancient temples, rice terraces, and vibrant cultures. These images were created largely under colonial auspices and aimed at attracting European and American tourists seeking the “Orient.”

Old East Indies reproduces a number of these early advertisements, making them into great decor pieces for your home, office or restaurant.

Balinese Dancer Photograph - Circa 1927

This autochrome portrait by Franklin Price Knott captures a nine-year-old Balinese dancer in elaborate traditional attire, crowned with an ornate gold-colored headdress and dressed in richly detailed ceremonial clothing. Taken in 1927 during the 73-year-old photographer’s ambitious 40,000-mile journey through Japan, China, the Philippines, Bali, and India for the National Geographic Society, the image is one of the earliest color photographs of Bali. Knott’s autochromes are regarded as milestones in the history of color photography. His Bali pictures helped introduce Western audiences to the island’s culture and beauty in the late 1920s, just before the height of the “Beautiful Indies” (Mooi Indië) promotional era of the 1930s, when shipping lines such as the Java-China-Japan Lijn marketed Bali as “the Isles of Romance and Beauty”.
