Threads of Life Textiles Sustaining textile arts of Indonesia since 1998 with 1,200 traditional weavers.

Threads of Life is a fair trade business that uses culture and conservation to alleviate poverty in rural Indonesia. The heirloom-quality textiles and baskets we commission are made with local materials and natural dyes. With the proceeds from the Threads of Life gallery, we help weavers to form independent cooperatives and to manage their resources sustainably.

This textile undergoes an intricate dyeing process, taking more than four months to tie the tiny ikat patterns before being dyed with indigo, Morinda citrifolia, and other natural dyes to achieve its rich, deep red-black ground.

The motif, Mata Semba, meaning “gathering together,” reflects the spirit of community. Worn as a shoulder cloth by the Mosalaki, the traditional leader of the community, this textile is reserved for special ceremonies.

A remarkable expression of knowledge passed down through generations.

This handspun Noving textile from the southern coast of Lembata is woven in classic stripes and created by a master dyer.

In Lembata, textiles play an essential role in marriage exchanges. Their value is reflected in the complexity of the weaving, with multi-part ikat textiles considered especially precious. The uncut warp threads of these tubular sarongs symbolize the enduring bonds and commitments within the community.

At Threads of Life, we work to sustain traditional weaving and natural dye practices passed down through generations, while supporting the ecosystems that make these traditions possible.

Indigo workshop from our July Lembata trip.

Cultivation for native Lembata indigo species are confined to the wet season, limiting dyers’ and weavers’ ability to produce community-sustaining threads and textiles. By utilising Bebali Foundation’s natural indigo paste, these villages may continue to develop their traditional blue colours year-round.

Strengthening Australia–Indonesia connections through culture, partnership and shared learning.

Australian Consul-General in Bali Jo Stevens recently visited the Bebali Foundation in Ubud to learn more about its inspiring work supporting more than 1,000 women weavers across Indonesia and preserving the country’s rich textile traditions.

For more than a decade, the has partnered with the Bebali Foundation (run by its sister organization ), supporting locally led initiatives through the exchange of skills, knowledge and experience. During that time, 19 Australian volunteers have worked alongside the foundation, contributing to its long-term growth while learning from Indonesia’s communities, culture and traditions.

Today, Australian volunteer Elizabeth Hill continues that partnership by mentoring the Bebali Foundation team in grants development, helping strengthen the organisation’s capacity to achieve its goals.
