Massive Earthquake Strikes Offshore Kamchatka Peninsula, Russia – Triggers Tsunami Warnings
An earthquake measuring magnitude 8.7 struck off the coast of Russia’s Kamchatka Peninsula on Tuesday night (July 29, 2025) local time or Wednesday (July 30, 2025). The Russian earthquake initially registered at magnitude 8.0 before being upgraded to 8.7 at 14:17 local time. The main tremor was followed by multiple aftershocks of varying magnitudes.
The quake prompted tsunami warnings in Alaska, Hawaii, and other parts of the U.S. West Coast. Japan’s Meteorological Agency advised residents to evacuate coastal areas immediately.
According to a report from the U.S. Geological Survey (via Reuters), the quake was shallow—at a depth of 19.3 km (12 miles)—with its epicenter located around 125 km (80 miles) east of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, a coastal city with a population of 165,000 along Avacha Bay.
This earthquake is among the strongest in recent decades. “Today’s earthquake is serious and one of the strongest in recent decades,” stated Kamchatka Governor Vladimir Solodov in a video posted on Telegram, citing Reuters (Wednesday, July 30, 2025).
After the main quake, tsunami warnings were issued across several regions, followed by aftershocks measuring 6.9 and 6.3 magnitude recorded 147 km and 131 km southeast of Petropavlovsk and Vilyuchinsk in Russia’s Far East.
🚨 In Hawaii, tsunami warning sirens sounded at 13:33 HST, followed by alerts at 14:43 and 15:23. Authorities recorded projected wave arrival at Hanalei at 19:10 HST.
🌊 Japan’s Meteorological Agency elevated tsunami warnings along the Pacific coastline, from Hokkaido in the north to Kyushu in the south. A tsunami of approximately 1 meter (3 feet) was expected to reach Hokkaido around 10:00 AM local time, with waves hitting eastern Honshu and southern Kyushu later in the day.
Residents were urged to evacuate coastal areas as the entire shoreline faced tsunami risk. “This danger may persist for several hours following the first wave, as subsequent waves will continue to arrive. Tsunami heights cannot be predicted, and the first wave may not be the largest,” stated Japan’s Meteorological Agency, citing ABC News (Wednesday, July 30, 2025).
🌐 The U.S. Tsunami Warning System also issued alerts for dangerous wave activity within the next three hours across parts of Russia, Japan, and Hawaii. Tsunami warnings were also in place for U.S. island territories including Guam and other islands in Micronesia.
📌 Kamchatka and Russia’s Far East lie within the Pacific Ring of Fire, a geologically active region prone to major earthquakes and volcanic eruptions.
