二十世紀末，島上的居民發現北邊的海平面之下有一個大海溝，而且島正向海溝緩緩滑落，有部份島民擔心島終會沉沒，開始大規模流散遷移，有部份島民發現原來沉沒並沒有想像中那麼快，便逐漸遺忘對陸沉的焦慮，留在島上繼續生活。三十年後，一名年輕小說家 Edwina 首次踏足小島，希望將這個她的出生地的記憶寫成故事，她日以繼夜明查暗訪，然而最終她卻分不清島民的記憶是對是錯，是真實抑或是虛幻。在小說接近完成之際，一個烽煙四起的晚上，島突然向大海溝加速滑落，陸沉危機一觸即發。
