Flourished Ornamental Signatures
with Michael Sull ✍🏻

A century ago, there were several abilities in penmanship that when performed spontaneously and consistently to a very high degree of skill, were defining qualities by which a person was generally regarded as a “Master Penman”.

When considering these qualities, one of the most unique, attractive, and visually creative examples took the form of Superscription, or as it was more commonly known by the title of Signature Writing. It was this novel style of ornamental handwriting, together with the Penman’s own sense of artistic design in producing a singular form of a person’s name, that captivated and inspired others with the unmatched beauty that could be performed with a pen.

The techniques of Signature Writing are seldom taught or practiced today; in a very real way, this singular form of what was often referred to as “personal display writing” has become somewhat of a lost chapter in today’s renaissance of Spencerian Penmanship. Our program with Michael TakePrideInPenmanship , however, will turn back the clock of time and once again bring this specialized form of ornamental handwriting to light.

From extra light to extra bold: white & black variations in Gothic, Italic and Humanistic

In calligraphy and typography, it is often said that letters take shape in black AND white, not black ON white: indeed, conceiving harmony through the spaces by observing the voids between forms is often the true key to achieving good results in calligraphic work; thus, white space can be even more important than the forms that inhabit it.

In this three-session workshop with Luca , we will explore three main styles (Gothic Textura, Italic, and Humanistic) while also reviewing the basic forms in order to handle weights ranging from the finest to the boldest, using this knowledge to create a final piece rich in contrast and dynamism.

This is an ntermediate-level workshop, particularly suitable for those who know at least the basics of one of the styles mentioned.

This workshop introduces you to the art of ornamental mandala drawing, where precise geometry forms
Mandalas can look intimidating, all those perfect circles and tiny details, but they are built from simple steps, and anyone can learn them. Over three live online lessons, Anjali ANJALI SINGH I Illustrator will take you from a blank page to three finished mandalas you will genuinely want to frame.

This workshop is for beginners and anyone who has tried mandalas before but wants to make them feel more balanced, intentional, and beautifully detailed. You don‘t need any prior drawing experience, just a pen, paper, and a little patience.

In each session, we will create one complete mandala together, along with the individual elements that go into it. Written Skylines
with Sabine Tack 🏛️✍🏻

Written Skylines are a unique way of creating a handmade piece of art, applying a technique at the meeting point of calligraphy and illustration. These skylines make great gifts for a vast number of occasions and can be an exciting addition to a calligrapher’s portfolio.

Applying basic principles of calligrams in a unique way, in this class with Sabine students will learn how to write the skyline of any city they choose to.

In the first week, we will go over the basics of calligrams before diving into how to draw a skyline the easy way. The class will touch on how to make your skyline recognizable, which landmarks to pick, how to layout and finally, how to place your chosen landmarks effectively.

Students do not need a lot of experience drawing in order to be able to participate. At the end of this first class, students will be able to draw their own layouts of skylines.

In the second week, we will explore how to translate the layouts we developed in week one into a written piece. We will touch on which hand to choose to write the skylines and how your choice of writing tool will affect the outcome of your piece. Students will learn how to add depth and which other effects can be achieved just by adjusting the writing.

At the end of the second week, students will be able to apply the principles learnt to their very own pieces.

Written Skylines may look complicated, however, following the proper technique, they are achievable for students of many levels of experience. As the skylines can be created using different writing tools as well as different hands such as Spencerian, Cursive or just a simple monoline hand, this class is suitable both for experienced calligraphers as well as beginners. This class is aimed at serving students with a wide variety of levels of experience.

White Vine, from the Renaissance to Contemporary Work

The white vine is a common decorative technique in Renaissance manuscripts, born in Italy. It is based on vegetal patterns that decorate the initials or borders in interlaced and colored scrolls.

In this course with Benoit , we will see how to build a vine around a letter and how to adorn it with leaves, flowers and other vegetal patterns. The first session will be dedicated to the study of historical layouts and patterns. The second one will be used to see what kind of modern interpretations we can make of this technique by modifying colors, layouts and flower shapes.

The Radiant Letter: Reviving the Lost Initials
with Martha Laurens ✨✍🏻

This 3-session workshop with Martha is a gentle, historically grounded introduction to the initials of illuminated manuscripts from the Romanesque era.

In this workshop, students will create one refined illuminated letter inspired by Romanesque manuscript art (c.11th-12th century), using gouache painting, simple gilding, and a guided ornament system. Focusing on one structured initial, the class offers a clear and approachable way to enter the art of illumination through colour, light, form, and balance.

Romanesque manuscript art provides a strong and elegant foundation for beginning illumination. Through a simplified project, students will be introduced to this visual language in a way that remains historically informed while still feeling accessible and achievable.

Students will work from a prepared Romanesque initial template and a guided ornament sheet, allowing them to focus on understanding how illumination is built rather than becoming overwhelmed by complexity or simply replicating historical examples. The workshop also encourages both structure and individuality, so that while all students work within the same historical framework, each finished initial may carry its own character and result.

By the end of the workshop, students will complete one framed Romanesque illuminated initial in the style of painted gouache, simple gilded accents, and guided ornamental elements. Students will also gain a clear introduction to how illumination is built through structure, colour, light, and ornament.
