Henry’s favorite pieces at Broad Museum, LA

I was hoping to start this painting back in 2019, but I just didn’t get the chance to begin.

Since then, I’ve moved countries twice, lived in four different homes and experienced a worldwide pandemic. Last autumn, after overcoming several health issues and a period of anxiety, I finally decided to bring this painting to life. I focused on “letting go”, even with respect to the way I paint.

Motherhood has been a complex journey for me, and it’s the main theme of this artwork. Raising a child is a profound challenge—one that many parents can relate to. However, I would never exchange this experience for anything else in the world as it has helped me grow and see the world from different perspectives.

As a mother, I noticed that I have become more sensitive to news of wars and violence, which seem to constantly dominate the headlines. Perhaps it’s the maternal instinct to protect my child which is being triggered.

Centuries ago, men were the primary participants in wars and there were no advanced automatic weapons capable of inflicting such extensive harm on women and children.

The feelings that surface when I hear of such atrocities have brought me to paint those miniature warriors in the background, which are inspired from old illustrations.

This is a portrait of a 93 year old German lady which I’ve painted in 2016 in Hamburg!
Born into a Jewish family, she and her family were arrested during the Second World War and sent to a N**i concentration camp. She was the only one of her family to survive in there.

I’ve posted this painting once before. This time is for Holocaust Remembrance Day on April 17th.
